Better Living, Better Lawn Care in San Pedro
Long before San Pedro became the busiest port in the United States, it was home to the Tongva-Gabrieleño. The archeological records here date back 15,000 years. The Tongva were called the "lords of the ocean" for their consummate mastery of oceangoing canoes. Hundreds of Tongva villages once covered the Southern California coastline.
Today, the Port of Los Angeles dominates the shoreline of San Pedro. The port supports the employment of more than half a million people throughout Los Angeles County. The cargo coming through the port makes up about 20 percent of all cargo coming from around the world into the U.S.
It's no surprise San Pedro is home to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. Check out the exquisite model ships, from the Francis Drakes Golden Hind to the USS Nimitz. There's also a play area for the kids.
The Fort McArthur Military Museum on S. Gaffey Street is dedicated to the history of the Army post, which guarded the harbor of Los Angeles from 1914 to 1974. The museum is housed within the galleries and corridors of the historic Battery Osgood-Farley. You could spend hours examining the military memorabilia here. Walk next door to the Korean Bell of Friendship. You can’t miss the huge bell is under a pagoda-shaped roof. South Korea gave this to the United States in 1976 as a bi-centennial gift and to commemorate the U.S. veterans of the Korean War.
One of the central landmarks of San Pedro has to be Cabrillo Beach. Generations of Californians have come here to relax and have fun in the sun. It’s a wonderful place to take a stroll at sunset and explore the tide pools. The fishing pier runs 1,200 feet out. You can bike on the pier, and you don't need a license to fish. You'll even find cleaning stations for the fish you catch.
You can also stroll Royal Palms State Beach, Point Fermin, and White Point. The views are always fabulous, and there's nothing quite like the fresh ocean air.
Want a glimpse of life under the vast Pacific Ocean? The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium gives you that opportunity. Here you can discover the undersea life of the Southern California Coast.
