The best time to water a lawn is from 6 to 8 a.m. During this time, the water pressure is highest, disruption of the water pattern from wind is low, and water lost to the atmosphere by evaporation is negligible. There are a bountiful amount of native flowers in St. Louis, and not all of them, if any, can keep through winter months. As most native flowers that can’t keep through the frost are perennials, you can’t bring them indoors but they will come back in the spring. Here are five popular perennial flowers, native to St. Louis:

Cardinal flower: Lobelia cardinalis; tall stems with tight clustered small and bright red flowers, making it easily attracted by birds, such as St. Louis’ very own Cardinal. Typically blooms in the fall time. Requires average soil moisture and full or partial sun exposure.

Black-eyed Susan: Rudbeckia hirta; looks strikingly similar to a sunflower with a darker seed-filled center with long yellow petals surrounding it. Requires average soil moisture and full or partial sun exposure.

Missouri Primrose: Oenothera macrocarpa; flower opens up to 4 inches wide and bloom later in the day, best in the spring and summer time. Requires average to dry soil moisture and full sun exposure.

Fire Pink: Silene virginica; appears as a bright red star shaped flower that particularly attracts hummingbirds in the late spring. Requires average to dry soil moisture and full or partial sun exposure.

Columbine: Aquilegia canadensis; red and yellow flowers that droop as the light on a desk lamp does, resonates well in woodland areas in particular. Requires average to dry soil moisture and full sun exposure and-or shade.
