Better Living, Better Lawn Care in McDonough
McDonough, Ga., was founded in 1823 and while it’s just a short drive southeast from Atlanta, the city maintained the distinct old-fashioned feel that sets it apart as a great place to live. Designed around a town square, many of the old buildings around the square remain. Even after nearly 200 years, people still love to gather around the old town square. Its centerpiece is the Henry County Courthouse built in 1897 by the renowned architectural firm, J. W. Golucke & Stewart Architects.
The courthouse and the historic jail are on the north side of the square, near the Welcome Center. The Welcome Center is inside a red-and-white 1920s Standard Oil gas station that’s been historically maintained. There’s a lot going on at the Welcome Center; from festivals, concerts or historic and artistic displays, it’s always entertaining.
McDonough’s nickname is the “Geranium City,” and every year since 1977 festival-goers have flocked to celebrate all things geranium. The downtown festival features dozens of arts and crafts booths.
Also on the town square is the C.O. Polk Interactive Museum, presenting more than 200 years of local history. The museum doesn’t just house historic objects, it’s interactive exhibitions reveal both old and new aspects of living in this quite, old-fashioned town.
Heritage Park on Lake Dow Road has many historic buildings from around the area, a nice walking trail, community gardens as well as the Veteran's Museum and the Wall of Honor. The walking trail is lined with venerable old trees, and there are two playgrounds for the kids. The museum is full of very interesting displays and information and displays and the Honor Wall feature Henry County military veterans who were killed or missing in action.
Southern Belle Farm is a 330-acre working family farm with all kinds of seasonal activities for the family. From picking strawberries in the spring, peaches in the summer and pumpkins in the fall, it’s the place for fresh produce. Fall is the best time of year to go to Southern Belle Farm with the kids; there’s a pumpkin patch, corn maze, pig races, and a cow train. Christmas is a good time to go, too; there are fresh-cut Christmas trees, caroling, cookies and Santa!
Noah’s Ark Animal Rehabilitation Center on Griffin Road is a sanctuary with more than 1,500 animals. The sanctuary serves both exotic and domestic animals and it’s a great place to spend a day with the kids, you can even picnic under the majestic oak trees. Shere Khan the tiger, Leo the lion, and Baloo the American black bear are perhaps the most famous denizens of this sanctuary; all three live together like brothers in the same habitat.
