Better Living, Better Lawn Care in Kennesaw
Kennesaw is a suburb of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The city is best known for its mandatory gun-possession ordinance which has been on the books since 1982. The law states that every head of household living within the city must maintain a firearm, along with ammunition. Perhaps it’s just a coincidence, but crime rates here are 41% below the national average.
Known from its early days as Big Shanty, due to the shacks that were built to house railroad workers. A grade going up from the Etowah River became known as the "Big Shanty Grade," and finally shortened to "Big Shanty." The town changed its name to Kennesaw under the town’s 1887 charter.
The annual Big Shanty Festival happens every April downtown with more than 200 arts and crafts booths and 20 food booths. More than 60,000 people from all over North Georgia flock to the parade and the festival.
Kennesaw also was at the forefront of free Wi-Fi. In 2008, the city opened four free Wi-Fi areas at Adams Park, Swift-Cantrell Park, the Ben Robertson Community Center and around the train depot near the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History.
Swift-Cantrell Park not only has free Wi-Fi but its also a favorite place for locals to gather, relax and play. The park spans 42 acres and features two playgrounds, a splash pad, a dog park, a skate park, picnic pavilions, and nice walking trails.
The local Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History is not only a local gem, but it’s also a Smithsonian Affiliations member. The Museum features the General locomotive, a substantial Civil War collection, as well as a restored locomotive assembly line from the early 20th century. There are also hands-on and interactive exhibits that are fun for the whole family.
The Zuckerman Museum of Art is located on the Kennesaw State University campus and presents contemporary artwork by both local and nationally acclaimed artists, as well as pieces from the university's collection. The museum is small, the art is mainly modern and best of all, admission is free.
Also located on campus is the Museum of History and Holocaust Education. The museum focuses on WWII history as well as the Holocaust, and while it’s small, you could easily spend a couple of fascinating hours here. It’s a nice monument of the tragedy of that era.
The Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a great place to explore the role this city played in the Civil War. The park is on the site of an important Civil War battle and there are several hiking trails around the grounds. It’s a great place to hike around, but locals say to go early to avoid the parking crunch.
The Town Center at Cobb is a great shopping mall, full of shops and a great food court. You can find just what you need here, without wasting a lot of time looking.
