Better Lawn Care in Bowie, MD
What started as a small railroad stop back in 1853 is now the largest city in Prince George’s County. Originally called Huntington City, the town changed its name to Bowie in honor of former Governor and president of the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad. That railroad attracted many people to the city since they now had a direct route to Washington D.C. Many government workers today still choose to make Bowie their home.
With plenty of things to see and do here, it’s a wonder anyone has time for work. Outdoor enthusiasts have plenty of options year-round. You’ll find two ice arenas, three community centers, and 72 ball fields in town. That’s not counting Prince George’s Stadium, home of the Bowie Baysox (a double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.) You can go hiking and biking at Acorn and Buckingham Parks. You’ll find plenty of deer and other creatures grazing at Whitemarsh Park. Nature lovers often flock to Allen Pond Park to feed the ducks or to see a Great Blue Heron go for a swim.
The city is also a mecca for art lovers. You’ll find an art gallery on the first and second floors of City Hall. The Bowie Center for the Performing Arts seats 800 people and features plays and concerts throughout the year. The Bowie Playhouse is a smaller venue, seating 150 in a theatre nestled in the woods. Don’t forget about the summer concerts at Allen Pond Park and on the Town Green in Old Town.
Preakness lovers can trace the roots of this triple crown event back to Bowie. The Bowie Race Track opened in 1914 and quickly attracted some of the nation’s top horse breeders. The Belair Stud Farm is known as the cradle of American thoroughbred racing. The track closed in 1985 but still serves as a training center for some of the country’s top racehorses.
