Better Living, Better Lawn Care in Waterford
It’s easy to see where Waterford gets its name. In 1818, Oliver Williams purchased land for $2 an acre, and he and his family established a farm on the banks of Silver Lake. That was the beginning of Waterford Township, so named for the astounding number of lakes in the area.
Thirty-four lakes surround the township, offering plenty of fishing, sailing, and boating. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area is a great place to enjoy the outdoors. Not only can you boat, swim and fish here, they also have a campground hidden within the woods. You’ll also find a large beach, horseback riding, and a gun range. What a great place to get away and spend the weekend!
Dodge State Park is another great place to relax with lots of beaches filled with soft sand. It’s a nice place to go sailing, or simply spend the day enjoying the beauty of Michigan.
The Waterford Historic Village in Fish Hatchery Park is the place to go to explore the town’s beginnings. It has more than a dozen historic buildings, filled with antiques, artifacts, and displays surrounding the history of the community. It’s open on Wednesdays, stop in for a cup of coffee and a free tour.
Hess-Hathaway Park is a farm and park in one. On one side there are horses, sheep, goats, peacocks, bunnies, chickens, turkeys, and pigs. On the other side is a gated playground for the kids with a soft surface under the play equipment. You can also explore the community garden, baseball field, and walking trails.
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights, the Oakland County Farmers Market is open on Pontiac Lake Road from 7 p.m. to late into the night. This is the place to go for farm-fresh produce, flowers and locally made, hand-crafted items. There are indoor and outdoor stalls so it’s also open in winter. Enjoy events throughout the year, including food truck rallies, Oakland Uncorked, and garage sales.
