Better Living, Better Lawn Care in Hillsboro
The Atfalati were the first people to live within the beautiful Tualatin Valley in Oregon. The Native American people lived here for more than 10,000 years before the white settlers arrived. The Atfalati maintained their open grassland with controlled burns, and moved from place to place during the spring and summer to maintain their hunter-gatherer lifestyle. In the winter, they settled down in longhouses. Sadly, the Atfalati population was decimated by disease after contact with Europeans in the late 18th century.
American citizens began to settle the Tualatin Valley starting in the 1840s; Hillsboro was finally incorporated as a town in October of 1876 by the Oregon Legislature. Today, the city is a center of both light manufacturing and high-tech industries; Hillsboro is considered to be the center of Oregon's “Silicon Forest.”
Bald Peak is the place to take in the views of the Tualatin Valley below; it’s a lovely place to have a picnic on the grassy hillside, and go for a short walk through the majestic Douglas firs.
While Hillsboro is a thoroughly modern, high-tech city, it retains much of the natural beauty the Atfalati were familiar with. For example, the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve on Highway 219 is an expansive 635-acre wildlife preserve within the city limits. It’s a great place for hiking and a peaceful place for bird watching and observing the area’s wildlife in their natural habitat.
Rood Bridge Park is a wonderful, large park with hiking and biking trails, meadows, ponds, a picnic area, tennis courts and a playground for the kids. It’s also a good place to launch your kayak into the Tualatin River.
The Orenco Woods Nature Park is the place to watch the great blue herons fishing in the wetlands. While dogs are not allowed in most of the city parks, you can take your mutt with you for a walk on the Rock Creek Trail here. Keep your dog on a leash at all times and on the trail.
If you love rocks and minerals, the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals has a huge, world-class collection of the finest rocks and minerals. They also have a collection of fossils, meteorites, and gemstones from around the world.
Finally, Roloff Farms is a fabulous place to take the kids; they have what could be called a “utopian playland” to entertain children of all ages. There is an Old West ghost town, beached pirate ships, tree houses and lots more. The time to visit is in October, during the pumpkin patch season.
