Better Living, Better Lawn Care in Brockton
Way back in In 1649, the leader of the Wampanoag tribe sold the area that is now Brockton to Myles Standish. That’ a name you may remember from American history class: Standish came to America on the Mayflower and played a leading role in the Plymouth colony from the very start. Initially, the town was named Bridgewater, but the name was changed in 1874, after a contentious process finally decided on naming it after Isaac Brock, a British commanding general during the War of 1812. During the Civil War, the city became the country’s largest producer of shoes, and until the late 20th century, Brockton was a major producer of shoes and leather goods.
Brockton is proud to proclaim itself as the first city in the world to have a three-wire underground electrical system. Thomas Edison himself threw the switch that lit up the city in 1883.
Brockton also became the first city to have a department store Santa, when James Edgar of Edgar’s Department Store donned the red suit in 1890. Carrying on the tradition, the city gained notoriety in 2010 and 2011 when it set the world record for the most people wearing Santa hats in one place; 2011 saw 1,792 people downtown donning a Santa hat.
But perhaps it’s best known as the "City of Champions." Champion boxers Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler were natives. Likewise, the high school sports teams here are consistent winners.
For the past 60 years, the Fuller Craft Museum has showcased contemporary craft-based art from a wide variety of genres. The collections include furniture, ceramics, glass, jewelry, wood, and textiles. There is also an outdoor sculpture garden, crafted from natural materials. More than 20,000 people each year visit this unique museum. In addition to the exhibits, the museum stages workshops for all ages; you can sign up to learn how to work in wood, fiber, glass, ceramics, and metal.
Right next to the museum is the gorgeous D.W. Field Park. The park spans 650-acres of meadows, fields, forests, and ponds. The oldest pond is Cross Pond, which was created way back in the 1790s. The park's best-known landmark is the observation tower; it’s known locally as Tower Hill. The tower was built in 1928 from natural stones gathered from around the park. Inside the tower are 90 steps, leading to an observation deck with an expansive view in every direction. While the park is open daily, the tower is only open one day a year on Columbus Day weekend. This celebration is known as Towerfest when the public can enjoy the view from on top of the tower.
Sports are big here too. The local baseball team, the Brockton Rox, plays at Campanelli Stadium. It’s a very affordable way to spend an afternoon, and the kids will love
