Better Living, Better Lawn Care in West Jordan
West Jordan was named by Mormon settlers after the River Jordan in Israel. Like its Biblical namesake, Utah’s Jordan River originates in a freshwater lake to an inland salt sea, the Great Salt Lake. Early on, West Jordan relied on sawmills, agriculture, and mining activity for its economy.
One of the first sawmills was built by Archibald Gardner, and in fact, the historic Gardner Mill has been developed into Gardner Village. Gardner Village is a unique shopping center listed on the National Historic Register and is also a Utah Historic Site. Today, Gardner Village is well-known for its holiday events, such as the popular WitchFest for Halloween, and the Woodland Fairy Festival and Farmers Market. The little ones will be delighted with the year-round petting zoo and the pony rides. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon or weekend.
Of course, this is Utah, so the great outdoors is never far away. Both Millcreek Canyon and Big Cottonwood Canyon are a world away from the city, yet so close. You can spend your summers here hiking, biking, rock-climbing, fishing, and camping. Hiking and biking to the canyon's alpine lakes are the best, with numerous trails leading to Lakes Blanche, Lillian and Florence. The winters in Big Cottonwood Canyon are active, too, spent skiing and snowboarding the slopes of the Wasatch Mountains.
West Jordan, above all, is a family-oriented place. The city manages 48 city parks, encompassing more than 350 acres. The Parks Department also manages more than 475 acres of open space. Beloved by generations, the Wild West Jordan Playground in Veterans Memorial Park looks just like an old Wild West town. It’s been recently renovated and upgraded, so take the kids this weekend to keep the tradition alive. Another favorite for families is the splash pad at Ron Wood Park at 5900 West New Bingham Highway. Finally, the Youth Soccer Complex has more than 20 soccer fields specifically for kids and teens.
The dog park next door to the animal shelter is the place for pet-parents to gather with their canine fur babies. The park is divided into different sections, for large, small and athletic dogs. You and your pooch will have an off-leash ball, playing with the other dogs.
One of the most unique parks here is the Conservation Garden Park. The park showcases beautiful and easy to maintain landscapes well suited for Utah's high desert climate. Here, you can get ideas and recommendations for landscaping that efficiently uses water.
