Mormon farmers began moving into the area during the 1860s and 1870s. But it was mining that defined the region's first four decades. Miners discovered silver in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and the town became a supply depot for the mining industry. Before long, Main Street was lined with saloons, hotels, gambling halls and brothels. Three silver smelters located here, and the territory was a significant smelting center for many years. When the silver ran out in the 1890s, Sandy reverted back to a farming community.

Perhaps even more challenging is the hike up Mount Olympus. At the top, you’ll be treated to an expansive view of the city below. But be warned it's for experienced hikers only! The county search and rescue team is called here more than any other trail in the region to rescue novices.

Farnsworth Farms is right in the middle of the city, so you don’t have to hike far for farm-fresh apples. The staff is best known for the delicious hand-pressed apple cider and the pumpkin patch in the fall.
