Questions and Answers
1. Have a plan. A great way to save money and make sure your garden will look great is to plan ahead. Have a drawing that will show the contours of the flower bed and plan out the plants you would like to have in your garden. You can go to the garden center or even just drive around your neighborhood to see what plants seem to flourish in your area as well as what color combinations will look attractive. Doing it right the first time is saving money in the long run.
2. A garden that is free of weeds is obviously more attractive. This means keeping up with the weeding but you can also use mulch to help keep the weeds at bay. The best mulch can vary depending upon where you are located. For example, shredded pink bark mulch is readily available in some areas but river rock or stone might be more appropriate in other areas.
3. I find that a good edge on the flower bed that is regularly maintained and flower beds with curves always give a finished look to your garden and are much more pleasing to the eye.
4. Using perennials and native plants will always be less expensive in the long run. Your own perennials can be split every few years or might self-seed which will provide you with free additions to your garden.. You can also trade with your family and friends to add new plants to your yard or even find free plants on places like Craigslist.
5. Another inexpensive way to improve the look of your yard is to keep your trees and shrubs pruned and naturally shaped.
6. Never try to βfit a round peg in a square holeβ. Attempting to grow plants that prefer moist soil in dry areas is a losing proposition in the long wrong. It is also expensive and time consuming to try to βdry outβ the wet soil at the bottom of the swale in your yard. Why not try planting plants that will thrive in those conditions instead.
These are just some ideas of inexpensive things you can do to help your garden look its best without spending a whole lot of money.
