Best Lawn Care in Anderson
Anderson has come a long way since being incorporated as a town in 1838. Named after Chief William “Adam” Anderson, the Native Americans called it Anderson’s Town. But the Moravian Missionaries referred to it as “The Heathen Town Four Miles Away.”
In 1887, natural gas was discovered in the area, and the Indiana gas boom was underway. As a result, the town grew to such a size that one newspaper called Anderson “The Pittsburgh on the White River.” Others simply called it the “Queen City of the Gas Belt.” The burgeoning rubber tire industry here led to yet another nickname: the “Puncture Proof City.”
You can explore the early history of this region at Mounds State Park. The park has 10 earthen works built by the Adena-Hopewell Native Americans, each one-of-a-kind. The Great Mound is the largest, and it was built around 160 B.C. Archaeologists have determined the mounds were astronomically aligned and used for religious ceremonies. Be sure to visit the Nature Center, which has a wildlife viewing room as well as interactive games. Over the weekends, you can participate in a naturalist-led hike and other interpretive programs.
The Rangeline Nature Preserve is also a good place to explore the local terrain. There are 180 acres with plenty of mountain bike trails for beginners and advanced riders. The preserve is also a favorite place to go biking, hiking, and fishing.
If you’d like to stay in town, the Oakley Brother’s Distillery on Eighth Street sits in one of the old, red-brick industrial buildings. The locals rave about the specialty drinks as well as the unique atmosphere. The windows are huge, and it’s a great place to relax and watch the world go by.
Another place to visit is Harrah’s Hoosier Park. In addition to playing the slot machines, you can bet on the horses. Even if you don’t like gambling, it’s a great place to take in a show or have a meal. They have nine restaurants, three bars, and both an indoor and an outdoor stage for live music and comedy.
If you prefer museums, you have plenty of choices. The Military Armor Museum on Crystal Street, the Museum of Madison Country History, and the Anderson Museum of Art on 10th Street are just a few offering talks and tours. The Museum of Art also has art classes and workshops for all ages.
