The 14 Most Miserable Metros for Mowing

lawn mowing

Let’s be honest: Most of us can’t stand mowing the lawn. It’s hard, dirty, sweaty, time-sucking work.

That’s why millions of us leave it to the pros to take care of our lawns. We dread taking on this tough task. And for residents of some metro areas, the task is even more of a chore. Actually, you could say it’s downright miserable.

To create our ranking of the 14 Most Miserable Metros for Mowing, we looked at four factors among the country’s 50 largest metro areas that make lawn care a particularly big pain in the butt:

  • Skin cancer risk. The higher the number, the more susceptible you are to skin cancer while you’re mowing.
  • Air quality. The higher the number, the more likely you are to be breathing bad air while you’re mowing.
  • Average daily humidity. The higher the number, the more likely you are to be dripping with sweat while you’re mowing.
  • Average annual precipitation. The higher the number, the more likely you are to be mowing the grass frequently.

After assigning an even value to those four factors, the Birmingham, AL, metro area rose to the top of our list.

Brutal in Birmingham

Bethany O’Rear, a Birmingham agent with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, says high temperatures in the region — three to four months out of the year, the thermometer zooms past 86 degrees — coupled with high humidity, insects and ozone pollution make mowing a challenge for both people and grass.

O’Rear acknowledges that lawn mowing in Birmingham can be brutal, but she says the outcome is worth the effort.  Fortunately, LawnStarter will soon provide lawn mowing in Birmingham, AL so you don’t have to suffer through the Alabama heat.

“You just need to take the necessary precautions during the dead of summer — sunscreen, insect repellent, and lots and lots of water for hydration purposes,” she says.
