The 15 Best Cities for Observing Naked Gardening Day 2017

Editor’s note: See updated story on World Naked Gardening Day.

Every first Saturday of May, thousands of nudists and horticulturists around the world strip down and head outdoors to celebrate World Naked Gardening Day.

Originally founded in 2005, the mission of World Naked Gardening day is “to move toward a healthy sense of both body acceptance and our relation to the natural environment.”

As a lawn mowing company, we’re big fans of all things gardening, and while we normally see it done clothed, who are we to judge?  So every year, we rank the top cities in the United States to observe the eccentric holiday that is World Naked Gardening day.

Gardening in the rain?

If you compare this year’s ranking to last year’s, you’ll notice that many cities have dropped off the list.  For example, last year’s winner Miami is nowhere to be found.

The reason for the shakeup?  Well, as fate would have it, meteorologists are predicting rain throughout the nation.  In fact, 84 of the top 100 metro areas by population had some amount of rainfall in the forecast.

But a little rain shouldn’t deter enthusiasts from celebrating.  In fact, on the first instance of the holiday – September 20, 2005 – there was nearly a half inch of rain in Seattle, where World Naked Gardening Day founder Mark Storey is from.

Not game for rainy-day, nude gardening?  In a 2011 interview, Storey said “There could be some little old lady in an apartment building in the middle of a big city, trying to put her potted plant into a bigger pot. That would count.”  So it is possible to observe the holiday indoors, apparently.

Ranking Methodology

Though many nudists throughout the country may have to put up with rain, there are plenty of cities where outdoor naked gardening is ideal this year.  We compiled May 6th’s weather forecast for the top 100 US metro areas by population, then used various data points to rank cities by how favorable the conditions are for nude gardening.  In order to qualify for the ranking, a city could not have rainfall in the forecast.

From there, we weighed the following four factors:

  • High temperature
  • Humidity
  • Wind speed
  • Cloudiness

All data was pulled from Open Weather Map, aside from humidity which came from

We compared the four factors against the following ideal weather benchmarks:

  • High temperature of 75 degrees
  • Humidity of 45 percent
  • 5 mph wind (light breeze)
  • 0% Cloudiness

Once compared with the ideal benchmarks, the four factors were evenly weighted to come up with the final rankings.  Our scale is from 1 to 4, with 4 being the most ideal for naked gardening.
