Solving Tree Care Blues in Tallahassee
Tallahassee is Florida's capital and offers a blend of everything there is to do and see in the state. Tallahassee has an abundance of state parks and wildlife reserves, historical buildings, vintage homes and plantations, and an endless array of museums. When the sun goes down, you don't want to miss Tallahassee's vibrant nightlife, including bars and blues clubs.
No surprise here, but Tallahassee is home to the historical capitol building, built in 1845 in Classical Revival style, and the center of the state legistlature from the state's inception until it was replaced in the 1970s. Restored to its 1902 appearance, the building now houses the Florida Historic State Capital Museum, which offers tours of the governor's office, the House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court. There's also an abundance of antiques and vintage photographs on display, outlining the rich history of the city and state. Visit the Knott House Museum, too. That's where, on May 20, 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation was declared to be in effect in Florida. The event is re-enacted yearly.
Want to go even further back in history? In Tallahassee that's not a problem. Check out the Mission San Luis de Apalachee, built in 1633. The mission is a U.S. National Landmark, now offering tours of how life would have been like during that time. You'll see a fort, church building, a convent, and a Spanish house. Each building is also filled with artifacts from that time period, dating back over 300 years.
In addition to being the capital of Florida, Tallahassee is home to Florida State University and Florida A&M University. But in addition to the governmental and educational facilities, Tallahassee is rich in natural gifts, too. Fred Drake Park is a favorite family outing. It features a 12 acre body of water, Lake Ella, which is surrounded by fountains, shaded picnic spots, and walking trails. There are a lot of ducks, geese, and turtles throughout the park. To dive even deeper into Tallahassee's nature getaways, visit the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park. Within its 1,000-plus acres, you'll find botanical gardens and historical buildings. You can also go cycling, hiking, and fishing among the Japanese maples, dogwoods, and azaleas.
Nature lovers can't get enough of Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park. Considered to be a significant archaeological area, the two mounds are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, dating back to 1050 to 1500 AD. The park itself also has walking trails for some much needed relaxation.
Locals looking for a fun night out head to Bradfordville Blues Club. Some of the best blues musicians in Florida have performances here. Madison Social is also consistently packed, thanks to its cocktails, entrees, and trivia nights. Bullwinkle's Bar and Saloon is popular with the 21-plus crowd. It's decorated like a typical Western saloon, and also features a patio out back with more bars and live entertainment.
Whether you want a peaceful journey through a botanical garden or a boozy bar crawl, Tallahassee is the city for you. Don't let a worrisome tree hold you back from some relaxation or fun.
