Spring Landscaping Projects by Season
Are you getting the most out of your Spring yard? This seasonal landscaping guide will help your yard reach its full potential.
Spring
- Lawn Care: Mowing and fertilizing begin in late February. Aerate before fertilizing, and consider using a post-emergent herbicide for weed control.
- Planting: Begonias, geraniums, petunias, and pansies should do best when planted in March. Plant annuals like marigolds, zinnias, and periwinkles for pops of color.
- Mulch: Replace, add, or refresh mulch.
- Irrigation: Give your lawn 1 inch of water per week and water before 10 a.m.
- Landscape Lighting: Add new lighting to your yard.
Summer
- Lawn Care: Continue to mow weekly. Spot-treat any summer weeds. You can do an optional second round of fertilizer in June.
- Irrigation: Give your lawn 1-1½ inches of water weekly. Check with the city about watering restrictions.
- Landscape Lighting: Add solar lights and lanterns.
Fall
- Lawn Care: Grass grows more slowly beginning in the fall, so mow less frequently. Fertilize in early September, and overseed if you want to. Apply a preemergent herbicide in October or December.
- Leaf Cleanup: Rake leaves, mulch, or hire a local leaf removal crew.
- Planting: Plant bulbs, asters, marigolds, and mums now to bloom next year. Fall is also the time to plant trees and shrubs.
- Mulch: Replace mulch.
- Irrigation: Water less often and winterize your setup.
Winter
- Shrub Pruning: Cut everything back in late winter before the new growth arrives.
- Fencing: Winter is the best time to install a fence in Spring, Texas.
- Hardscaping: Late winter is perfect for installing paver walkways and patios, decks, stone garden walls, and stamped concrete.
