No one could blame Houston Mayor Annise Parker for being the chief cheerleader for her native city. After all, that’s part of her job. Since taking office in 2010, Parker has promoted the various virtues of Houston, including its diversity, to a global audience.
“Some cities may be the melting pot, where differences melt away. Some cities may be the tossed salad, where everything keeps its separateness,” Parker said in her 2015 State of the City address (her final one as mayor). “We’re the fusion of Korean-braised pork tacos with a side of saag paneer and a glass of Saint Arnold.”
