Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, Memphis has shaped the history and culture of the South. It was established in 1819 by James Winchester, John Overton, and Andrew Jackson, before his presidency. Since then, it has grown into a pivotal hub of Southern culture and commerce. FedEx is the largest employer and has its headquarters in the city. Memphis hosts a series of four yearly festivals called "Memphis in May," designed to promote the city's heritage and attract visitors. This includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, International Week, the Great River Run, and the Beale Street Music Festival. The barbecue contest is the largest pork barbecue competition in the world and attracts more than 100,000 attendees. For year-round barbecue, they have famous restaurants like Central BBQ or Interstate Barbecue.

The city was a significant location in the American civil rights movement. It's the home of the National Civil Rights Museum, built around the Lorraine Motel, and has a partnership with the Smithsonian. Check out the Burkle Estate's Slave Haven Museum, one of the stations on the Underground Railroad.

For music lovers, there are a handful of essential locations aside from the famous Beale Street. Sun Studio is a popular landmark that offers tours during the day and still functions as a studio at night. It's where Elvis Presley recorded his first song at 18 and has also worked with world-class artists like B.B. King, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. The Stax Museum of History puts the spotlight on famous soul singers, ranging from Aretha Franklin to Ray Charles.

Outside of music, there's still plenty to do when you're out on the town. Catch the Memphis Grizzlies: an NBA team that plays at the FedEx Forum to more than 18,000 attendees. The Memphis Zoo has a No. 1 rank for the top zoo in the nation, according to TripAdvisor and a national survey by Morey Associates. It has more than 3,500 animals from 500 distinct species. Don't forget The Peabody Memphis, a historic luxury hotel with ducks that march to the central fountain each day.
