Garland was first home to the Caddo peoples. The Spanish claimed the area in the 18th century as part of New Spain. Texas would become part of Mexico when the nation won its independence in 1821. However, American settlers revolted, forming the Republic of Texas in 1836, which would eventually join the United States. When more people moved into Garland, they formed two rival communities. By the 1870s Embree and Duck Creek fought over which would receive the train station and post office. A judge settled the dispute by putting the post office between the two towns,, which eventually merged into Garland. By 1904, Garland was home to about 800 people. Starting in the 1930s, businesses began to move into the area and the population grew. As Dallas continued to expand, Garland's population would take off as a suburb, and by 1980, the city had grown to 140,000.
