If you’re a homeowner in Hillsborough County, FL, you’re paying a premium for that privilege.

In 2015, mortgage holders in Hillsborough County paid the highest median property taxes for owner-occupied homes in the Tampa-St. Petersburg metro area: $2,099. That’s according to recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 American Community Survey. Next was Pinellas County ($1,777), followed by Pasco County ($1,623) and Hernando County ($1,115).

Wendy Peterson, a Redfin real estate agent in Tampa Bay, says that since Hillsborough County has the highest median home value in the area, it also has the highest median property taxes. Peterson adds that Hillsborough County’s property taxes are tempered by Florida’s homestead exemption, as well as the state’s 3 percent annual cap on property tax increases for homes covered by the homestead exemption.

Homebuyers don’t appear to be put off by the property taxes in Hillsborough County.

“Hillsborough County is centrally located and very close to downtown and the beaches, and with highly ranked schools in the area as well, buying demand here continues to increase,” Peterson says.
