Friendly Landscaping in Oklahoma City
Almost 1.4 million people call the Oklahoma City metro area home. It's the capital of Oklahoma and the largest city in the state. Standing tall in the Great Plains, OKC is home to one of the world's largest livestock markets. The city itself also stands on top of an active oil field, and the state capitol building even has an oil derrick on its lawn.
OKC has a reputation for its terrifying weather. Located in the middle of tornado alley, thirteen strong tornadoes have hit this western metropolis. They rate from F4 to F5 on the Fujita scale. Numerous other smaller tornadoes have also made landfall in the city, including a record-setting five in one day in 1974.
Oklahoma City natives love their sports. Sandwiched between Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma, locals have nicknamed the fierce rivalry "Bedlam." OKC is also the proud home of a National Basketball Association team. In 2008, the Seattle SuperSonics relocated and became the Oklahoma City Thunder. They've been playing downtown at the Chesapeake Energy Arena ever since.
This area was first home to the Osage, Quapaw, Caddo, Wichita, Waco, Tawakoni, Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache nations. In the 1830s, the U.S. government carried out a removal campaign against Native American tribes in the area. They forcibly relocated people from the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations to Oklahoma reservations.
During the Land Run of 1889, pioneers famously settled Oklahoma City in one day. On April 22, 1889, the federal government released over 1.8 million acres for settlement. The Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Cheyenne tribes ceded this land to the U.S. government. Over 10,000 homesteaders settled in the area, and the population doubled in only ten years. It has only continued to grow.
Oklahoma City was also the site of one of the worst domestic terrorism incidents in the United States. On April 19, 1995, terrorists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols detonated a bomb near the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. It killed 168 people and injured over 680 more. In response to the atrocity, over 7,000 locals volunteered to donate blood. Many even used their cars as ambulances for the wounded. This kind of behavior has given Oklahoma City the nickname, "the Big Friendly."
