Mesa's Most Amazing Landscaping
Mesa is a bustling suburb 20 miles east of Phoenix. With over 500,000 calling the town home, Mesa is the nation's largest suburban city and the third-largest city in Arizona. According to Pew Research Center, Mesa is also America's most conservative major city.
Renowned for its desert climate, the city has spectacular views of the Superstition Mountains. Mesa is home to several unique attractions for locals and visitors to enjoy. Chief among them is the Arizona Museum of Natural History, designed to inspire wonder at the earth's 4.5 billion years of history. The museum features over 58,000 artifacts from Arizona and the American Southwest, including skeletons of rare and fascinating dinosaurs.
Mesa is also home to beautiful desert hiking spots, including Papago Park and Usery Mountain Regional Park. Here you can find rock formations, scenic views, and desert wildlife. These parks are fun for the whole family. Usery Mountain features camping sites with electricity, and Papago even has a zoo.
Aviation and military buffs will love the Commemorative Air Force Museum. Mesa was home to an important Air Force training base constructed in 1941, which has since become a museum. One of Mesa's top-rated attractions, this hangar holds military planes from throughout history. Visitors can book a ride on one of its seven operational World War II era planes.
The town of Mesa is also home to Golfland Sunsplash. This amusement park offers a good time for the whole family, with three mini-golf courses, an arcade, go-carts, and bumper boats. The entertainment center also features a water park and is perfect for families with small children.
Mesa's history begins over 2,000 years ago, with the arrival of the Hohokam people. They built some of the most sophisticated canals in the prehistoric world. Their ancient irrigation system included waterways up to 90 feet wide and ten feet deep, some of which stretched as far as 16 miles. After the Hohokam's mysterious disappearance, the Apache moved into the area. In time, these tribes were forcefully relocated by the US military, clearing the way for American settlements. The first American settlers were Mormons, who arrived in 1877. The city takes its name from the First Mesa Company, which dug additional irrigation canals to keep water flowing in the arid climate. Some of their channels followed the ancient tracks first excavated by the Hohokam. Since then, Mesa has become one of America's fastest-growing cities.
