What is aeration? The process of aeration pokes holes in compacted soil to improve its ability to breathe and make it easier for grass roots to absorb the nutrients needed to thrive.

How do you aerate your lawn? There are a handful of ways — you can rent an aerator for core aeration, you can hire a lawn care service to either core aerate your lawn or apply liquid aeration, or you could use aerator shoes to poke holes in your lawn.

When should you aerate your lawn? Most lawns will benefit from being aerated every 1 to 5 years, but what about your lawn? Well, that depends on a few key factors, including your soil type, your grass type, and the level of soil compaction.

But generally…

  • Cool-season grasses thrive best when aerated in early spring or fall. While early spring works, fall is the true superstar season for aeration. As temperatures start to chill out and moisture levels rise, your turf will bounce back faster than a rubber ball on a trampoline.
  • Warm-season grasses prefer aeration in late spring through early summer. This is when your grass is actively growing and ready to recover from aeration.
