Akron is a booming city in Ohio, located on the western edge of the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau. It was founded in 1825 by Simon Perkins and Paul Williams, at the summit of the developing Ohio and Erie Canal. In the 1910s, the population grew quickly, making it the fastest-growing city in the nation. Today, it's home to over 198,000 people. It's hard to get far into the city without noticing the dense history of tire and rubber manufacturing. Home of the Goodyear Blimp, Akron still goes by the nickname, the Rubber Capital of the World. It was also once known as the center of airship development, and the city of invention.
Akron is also well known in popular culture. The city was mentioned in a Stephen King novel, episodes of the TV shows Glee, Seinfeld, and Criminal Minds, and even a music video by Drake. Lots of history originated here. In 1847, the state legislature passed a bill creating the K-12 school system as we know it today. In 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous began with a small meeting in Akron between two friends. The city has also hosted historical speeches from Sojourner Truth, W. E. B. Dubois, Bill Clinton, and Marcus Garvey.
Quaker Oats was created here, as well as the first waffle cone, and caramel corn.
There are many scenic places to visit in Akron. The city is home to a historical movie theatre from the 1920s, the Akron Civic Theatre. It also houses the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, Akron Zoo, the Akron Art Museum, Lock 3 Park, and Dr. Bob's House, a tribute to the founding of AA. There's also no shortage of places to eat, with restaurants carrying food from India, China, Vietnam, France, Mexico, Italy, and Thailand. Don't forget about American food either, while dining in authentic drive-ins such as Swensons, or video game dive bars downtown. In fact, Swensons Drive-In was featured on Iron Chefs Food Feuds, and won.
