The city was finally incorporated in 1898. Tulsa's economy began to grow with its significant energy industry. The city eventually earned the nickname, the "Oil Capital of the World."

In the earliest part of the 20th century, Tulsa was home to one of the most prosperous African American communities in the U.S. This neighborhood was known as "Black Wall Street." Since the mid 20th century, Tulsa has continued to grow with aerospace, financial services, and telecommunications.
