Perfect Landscaping in Tulsa
Oklahoma's second-largest city, Tulsa, is home to over 400,000 people. That number doubles when you count the people in the metro area.
Based in Green Country, Tulsa sits on the banks of the Arkansas River and is considered a center of culture and arts in its state. Tulsa is also home to many local attractions. The Philbrook Museum of Art charms visitors with its expansive gardens. This museum features collections from all over the world, including Native American, African, Asian, and contemporary works. The Philbrook Museum is part of what makes Tulsa a cultural center in the region. You can enjoy the Tulsa Aquarium. Built in 2003, this 72,000 square foot attraction houses a dazzling array of aquatic life. You'll see sharks and coral reef habitats, and get a chance to check out local wildlife. The aquarium features Ozark habitats and Oklahoma species.
The city also contains its share of quirkier sites. The Blue Whale of Catoosa is a favorite roadside attraction along Route 66. Built in the 1970s on a small swimming hole, this life-sized whale sculpture draws tourists. You can even crawl in its mouth and slide down its fin into the water.
You can always spend a weekend at Gathering Place, an enormous downtown park on the east bank of the Arkansas River. This park covers over 100 acres and contains a water playground, a boathouse, a skatepark, a wetland pond, and several trails. Gathering Place is the perfect spot to bring the family for a day outdoors.
The land that is now Tulsa was first settled by the Lochapoka and Creek tribes in 1836. They established several villages after the Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced them from their eastern lands. Today Oklahoma remains home to several tribes, including the Cherokee and Osage. Tulsa saw several battles during the Civil War, even though Oklahoma was not yet a state. The city was finally incorporated in 1898. Tulsa's economy began to grow with its significant energy industry. The city eventually earned the nickname, the "Oil Capital of the World."
In the earliest part of the 20th century, Tulsa was home to one of the most prosperous African American communities in the U.S. This neighborhood was known as "Black Wall Street." Since the mid 20th century, Tulsa has continued to grow with aerospace, financial services, and telecommunications.
