At 290,000 square feet, the IKEA store under construction southeast of downtown Jacksonville, FL, is about 60 percent bigger than a typical Walmart Supercenter. The square footage of the IKEA store is small, though, compared with the outsize impact that the store will have on the Jacksonville area’s economy.
“High-end and destination retailers moving into a city signifies a region is growing and has a bright future,” says the JAXUSA Partnership, an arm of the JAX Chamber. “As these retail establishments enter the market, it signals to the rest of the world – corporations, financial institutions, manufacturers, technology companies – that the city is a good investment for long-term business growth.”

Located on a 25-acre site, Jacksonville’s first IKEA store is set to welcome customers in the fall of 2017.
“We know there are many customers in the area who are excited for us to open, including those driving long distances to shop at our other stores, as well those who have yet to experience the unique IKEA shopping concept,” says Lars Petersson, U.S. president of IKEA.
To share in that excitement, we took a look at how many IKEA stores could fit into various counties and communities around the Jacksonville area. We know the region couldn’t actually accommodate thousands more IKEA stores, but we can dream really, really big.
