Founded in the 1880s, Aurora originated as the town of Fletcher, named after Donald Fletcher who saw the town as a real estate opportunity. It quickly grew thanks to military bases like Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, Buckley AFB, and Lowry.
Sports Illustrated named Aurora Sportstown for Colorado in 2004. The city attracts more than 30 regional and national sports tournaments each year. The city also manages more than 100 parks and 6,000 acres of open space and natural land. Maybe the perfect place for that cold drink and fun with friends is at Cherry Creek. The park surrounds an 880 surface acre reservoir (close to 880 football fields). The park features a prairie environment with bike paths bordered by hills. You'll also find plenty of opportunities for camping, picnics, and boating. The marina also rents jet skis.
Further east, there's the Aurora Reservoir. While they don't allow motorized boats, there's plenty of opportunities for fishing. Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocks the reservoir with tiger muskie, catfish, smallmouth bass and white suckers. There's also a place to go scuba diving as well as an archery range.
After a day on the beach, there's nothing like a night on the town. Aurora has a multitude of ethnic restaurants to enjoy. There's Monsoon Cusine of India, Helga's German Deli, and My French Press.
