Questions and Answers
Brown is the New Green: While a brown lawn may not be so pretty, letting a lawn go brown and dormant over the summer is NOT bad β itβs actually better for the environment.
Clovers: While many see clovers as a weed, clovers add nitrogen to soil. Nitrogen is the element that greens grass and plants. Clover is also drought tolerant/resistant. It will be green when the rest of the lawn is brown.
Spike It: Aerate the lawn when the ground is moist not soggy, especially if you have compacted soil or heavy thatch. This allows the roots to get oxygen and absorb water and nutrients. Water after you aerate so the lawn does not dry out.
Sow the Seeds: Overseed a lawn (and water) in the early part of September, especially if you live in the Midwest. This can be done after aeration.
Fertilize: Fertilize a lawn in September thru October. Use a fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ration. This means itβs highest in nitrogen and will help the lawn green up faster in the spring. Donβt apply fertilizer in hot dry spells. This will cause the grass to grow, but it will also require excessive water use to keep up to speed with its growth needs.
The LawnMower: Raise the height of your lawn mower to 2.5 β 3β high. This will keep the grass blades longer and help the lawn from drying out as quickly. Keep the blades on the mower sharp to keep evenness.
Leaf Clippings: Leave leaf clippings on the grass. Itβs like free fertilizer. They add natural elements to the grass. Just donβt leave clumps of grass. If you have clumps of grass, pull them apart and disperse it over a larger area.
