Modesto's locals are never lacking something to do. The city's thriving downtown features eclectic restaurants, including gastropubs, tapas, wine cafes, and upscale cuisines from around the world. Downtown Modesto also features vibrant nightlife, live entertainment, and three weekly farmers markets. There's even a monthly art walk that spans multiple venues.

Modesto also holds a variety of fascinating attractions. Fans of historical architecture will love the McHenry Mansion. This white, Victorian style mansion was first erected in the 1880s. It's been restored twice and was opened to the public in 1983. The city also holds the George Lucas Plaza, a bronze statue inspired by his 1973 film, "American Graffiti."

The scenic Tuolumne River also runs through town, as it makes its 149-mile journey from its headwaters high in Yosemite National Park to the Central Valley, where it joins the San Joaquin River. With canyons, waterfalls, and clear, blue water, the Tuolumne is a destination for river rafting, kayaking, and fly fishing.

Modesto began as a railroad stop connecting Sacramento and Los Angeles in 1870. The town derives its name from William C. Ralston, a financier instrumental in Modesto's early construction. The city was supposed to be named after him. However, when Ralston refused this honor, they named the town "Modesto," after his display of modesty. The town continued to grow with an economy based on agriculture and railroad traffic. In World War II, the area's industries kept the troops fed by producing canned goods, powdered milk, and eggs.
