Raised garden beds are filled with a special soil mix and sectioned into 1-square-foot segments.<\/p>    <p>Square foot gardens take up 20% less space than traditional rows and use about 10% less water. Most homeowners stick to four feet wide, so reaching each square is easy. If you have fertile ground, it&#8217;s a shame to waste it.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-square-foot-gardening-basics\">Square Foot Gardening Basics<\/h2>    <p>Mel focuses on conservation and hearty harvests, so he encourages the following practices:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Save seeds:<\/strong> Only plant the number of seeds you plan to grow. There are some exceptions to this rule. Carrots and lettuce require 2 &#8211; 3 seeds per plant.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Preserve soil:<\/strong> Rotate your crops each year, meaning you should grow a different variety of vegetables in your garden each season.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Utilize space: <\/strong>Properly plan your garden based on the food you will consume and plant the appropriate number of plants per square.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Watering plants<\/strong>: Mel suggests putting water in a bucket to warm in the outside sun. Use a cup to take water from the bucket and apply the water directly to each plant&#8217;s root zone. Knowing how often and how much water to give a vegetable garden is essential.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Organic gardening:<\/strong> Mel encourages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/gardening-2\/organic-pest-control-that-works\/\">organic gardening practices<\/a>. Place these vining plants in a corner square so they can sprawl outside the box. Grow one plant in one to two squares.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"9-gardening-tips\">Gardening Tips<\/h2>    <p>Here are some general gardening tips to ensure a hearty, plentiful harvest:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Don&#8217;t remove plants:<\/strong> If you have extra plants, trim them back instead of removing them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Add mulch:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/mulch-types-tips-guide\/\">Mulch<\/a> your garden to shade the soil. The sun will evaporate less water, so more water gets to your plants, and the shady ground discourages weed growth.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Consider germination rate:<\/strong> Plant extra seeds when growing plants with a low germination rate. About half the sowed seeds will sprout if they have a 50% germination rate.
