They can cause outages and are a fire hazard, since sparks can light dry branches. When planning a new design, consider where trees might fall, especially giant shade trees.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Already have a tree dangerously close to the house?<\/strong> Call a professional to trim or remove it. University of Florida guidance also recommends planting sites with at least 3 feet of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu\/plants\/trees-and-shrubs\/trees\/trees-that-can-withstand-hurricanes\/\">soil depth<\/a> so roots can anchor firmly.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, be careful not to overwater your trees. &#8220;Overwatered plants usually have shallower root systems and are also more susceptible to root rot, both of which can increase the likelihood that a tree or other landscape plants become uprooted during a hurricane,&#8221; Marek says.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"4-5-determine-your-trees-health-and-prune-them\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Determine Your Trees&#8217; Health and Prune Them<\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;d say one of the most important things for homeowners is to determine the health of trees that are in their landscape before a hurricane is expected,&#8221; Marek says.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, she recommends having a certified arborist inspect and possibly prune any trees that are near their house. To find an ISA-certified arborist, &#8220;We encourage homeowners to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treesaregood.org\/Find-an-Arborist\" target=\"_blank\">Trees are Good website<\/a>,&#8221; Marek says.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proper structural pruning gives trees a much better chance of surviving a hurricane by improving their form and removing weak growth. Professional tree trimmers recommend:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><p>Keeping the canopies raised and thinned out a little.<\/p><\/li>    <li><p>Removing branches with weak spots, cracks, rot, fungus, or other signs of decay.<\/p><\/li>    <li><p>Reducing the length of branches competing with the main trunk.<\/p><\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One important note:<\/strong> If your tree&#8217;s diameter at breast height is 24 inches or greater, or you want to prune a tree in the city right-of-way, you&#8217;ll <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tampa.gov\/construction-services\/tree-permitting\/tree-resources\">need a permit<\/a> in some cities.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"5-6-choose-salt-tolerant-plants\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.
