The soil test results will show you the nutrient levels of your lawn, which you\u2019ll need to know to fertilize it properly.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>You can either use a DIY soil test kit or send soil samples to a local soil testing laboratory. Except for some parts of New York, the soil in the Northeast is typically acidic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/why-how-to-lime-lawn\/\">Treat acidic soil with lime<\/a> as needed. Don\u2019t add lime to your soil if it is wet.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"clear-winter-debris\">3. Clear Winter Debris<\/h2>    <p><strong>Best time to remove winter debris: <\/strong>early April&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Once the snow has melted, clean up leaves, branches, twigs, and other debris. A clean lawn is much easier to work with, but it\u2019s also healthier for your grass. A lawn full of debris is more prone to getting diseases, pests, and thatch.<\/p>    <p>You can use a leaf blower or a rake to clean your lawn. While it\u2019s less convenient, using a rake might be a better choice as it can remove thatch and matted grass, which can prevent new grass from growing.<\/p>    <p>If you live in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/maine\/best-grass-seed-me\/\">Maine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/new-hampshire\/best-grass-seed-new-hampshire\/\">New Hampshire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/vermont\/best-grass-seed-vermont\/\">Vermont<\/a>, and the rest of New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts you may still have melting snow in May. Clean up your lawn as soon as you\u2019re able to so your grass will be healthier and less disease-prone.<\/p>    <p>If you plan to rake your lawn, <strong>wait until your lawn is dry<\/strong>. To give your lawn a uniform appearance, you\u2019ll need to overseed these patches. However, the best time to overseed in most areas in the Northeast is between late summer and early fall.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Bunch-type grasses like tall fescue, most fine fescues, and perennial ryegrass recover very slowly as they rarely spread. If you have a mix of grasses on your lawn, this shouldn\u2019t be an issue.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p><strong>Note: <\/strong>If you need to overseed your lawn, remove weeds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/dethatch-and-aerate-at-same-time\/\">aerate, and dethatch<\/a> your lawn before seeding. Additionally, ensure the soil is dry before adding the seeds.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"control-weeds\">5. Control Weeds<\/h2>    <p><strong>Best time to control weeds: <\/strong>From April to early May (depending on your location)<\/p>    <p>Crabgrass, black medic, spotted spurge, and yellow woodsorrel are some of the common weeds in the Northeast. Weeds start growing as soon as the soil temperatures are warmer. Removing weeds before they grow ensures your lawn grows healthy through the summer.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>If weeds have already grown in your lawn, pull them by hand if there are only a few. You can hand-pull dandelions once they bloom.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p><strong>Pre-emergent weed control: <\/strong>Apply as soon as the soil temperature reaches 55\u00b0F (or when the air temperature hits 65\u00b0F) to kill weeds at their source before they germinate.<\/p>    <p><strong>Tip: <\/strong>You can also use forsythia blooms to time your pre-emergent application. If you see these golden flowers, it\u2019s time to apply your pre-emergent weed killer. Don\u2019t wait for the forsythia blooms to drop.<\/p>    <p><strong>Note: <\/strong>If you\u2019re going to dethatch and aerate your lawn this spring, apply pre-emergent herbicide after. You can dethatch and aerate either before pre-emergent weed control application or postpone these procedures to fall.<\/p>    <p><strong>Post-emergent weed control: <\/strong>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/applying-post-emergent-herbicides-to-your-lawn\/\">post-emergent herbicides<\/a> this month if any weeds germinate despite their pre-emergent application. You can also hand-pull or resort to other natural weed control methods. Apply Fertilizer&nbsp;<\/h2>    <p><strong>Best time to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-fertilize-lawn\/\"><strong>add fertilizer<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>When the soil temperature is at least 55\u00b0F (mid-April to mid-June)&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>If your soil test results tell you that your soil is lacking in nutrients, fertilize your lawn this month. You can fertilize your lawn when the soil reads 55\u00b0F (or at 65\u00b0F air temperature).<\/p>    <p>Most lawns typically need 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. However, 1 pound of nitrogen doesn\u2019t mean 1 pound of fertilizer. Check your fertilizer\u2019s product label to find out how much you can cover with one package.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p><strong>Note:<\/strong> It\u2019s typically still too cold to fertilize Zoysiagrass in May, even in the southern states of the Northeast.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"look-for-lawn-diseases\">7. Look for Lawn Diseases<\/h2>    <p><strong>Best time to check for lawn diseases: <\/strong>April<\/p>    <p>The cool and humid weather of spring can foster fungi that cause lawn diseases. The melting snow doesn\u2019t help with the moist conditions that fungi love. Read the list below to find out about some common lawn diseases during spring:&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/snow-mold\/\"><strong>Snow mold<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>Pink and gray snow mold are the primary lawn diseases to look out for in spring. Snow mold cause patches of matted grass that can look gray, tan, or pink.<\/li>    <li><strong>Fairy rings and mushrooms:<\/strong> There are three types of fairy rings. They can look like dark green circles of grass, brown circles of grass, or circles of mushrooms.&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><strong>Anthracnose: <\/strong>This causes reddish-brown lesions to appear on grass blades. Over time, reddish-brown patches of grass will form on your lawn. They can also appear on trees and other plants.<\/li>    <li><strong>Leaf spot: <\/strong>Leaf spot causes grass to develop small brown spots. These spots enlarge over time and develop brown or purplish-red borders. Leaf spot progresses to melting out.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>If you discover symptoms of these lawn diseases, it\u2019s best to control the diseases as soon as possible. Otherwise, your lawn might sustain significant damage that only time and proper care can heal.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mow-your-lawn\">8. It will start growing only at that temperature, so it might take a few weeks before you can mow your Zoysia lawn.<\/p>    <p><strong>When should I mow this spring?<\/strong> Besides monitoring the air temperature, you should wait until the grass is tall enough before mowing. Any more than that may stress out your lawn.<\/li>    <li>Mow down to your turf\u2019s ideal height. Cut your grass too short and you can damage the roots and cause your lawn to become weak and susceptible to lawn diseases and lawn pests. Try to cut down to the higher end of the recommended height, though. Consult the table below to find out your turf\u2019s ideal height.<\/li>    <li>Mow in a different pattern every time you mow. This will force your grass to grow in different directions, which makes it more resilient.<\/li>    <li>Don\u2019t mow when your lawn is wet. Wet grass can clog your mower, making it spit out clumps of wet grass that can suffocate your lawn.<\/li>    <li>When you mow, leave the grass clippings on your lawn instead of bagging them. Water Your Lawn Properly<\/h2>    <p><strong>Best time to start watering your lawn: <\/strong>May&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Despite the snowmelt and the spring showers, you will need to water your lawn at some point this spring. Proper irrigation is crucial for good lawn health and disease prevention. Here are some lawn watering tips:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Water your lawn early in the morning. This is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/water\/best-lawn-watering-times\/\">best time to water your lawn<\/a>. You want to water your grass before it gets too hot so your lawn has ample time to dry off before the chilly evening temperatures set in.
