Sadly, residents of Montana are all too familiar with tragedies like the Dahl Fire, with wildfires roaring across thousands of acres every year.<\/p>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New data brings the ever-present danger of Montana wildfires into sharper focus.<\/span><\/p>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A LawnStarter analysis of data from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.corelogic.com\/about-us\/news\/corelogic-data-shows-1.8-million-homes-in-13-western-us-states-at-severe-risk-of-wildfire.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoreLogic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a provider of real estate data, shows Montana faces the biggest risk of wildfire damage to single-family homes among 13 wildfire-prone states in the West and Southwest. Those 13 states form a geographic zone with the highest overall wildfire risk in the U.S. LawnStarter\u2019s calculations put Montana\u2019s wildfire risk at more than 49 homes per 1,000 residents.<br><\/span><\/p>    <p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GxYEXw61osA\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By&nbsp;sheer volume, California and Texas lead CoreLogic\u2019s list of the 13 states in the West and Southwest that have the most single-family homes at \u201cextreme\u201d or \u201chigh\u201d risk of damage caused by wildfires. In California, 645,445 homes fall into the \u201cextreme\u201d or \u201chigh\u201d risk category, with Texas coming in second place at 532,317.<\/span><\/p>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those numbers are to be expected, given that California and Texas are the country\u2019s two most populous states. So we decided to pair the CoreLogic risk data with Census Bureau population data to arrive at a per-capita look at the risk of wildfire damage to homes. Relying on that formula, Montana climbed to the top of our list.<\/span><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Vulnerable State<\/h3>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Montana has far fewer homes in the \u201cextreme\u201d and \u201chigh\u201d risk columns &#8212; 50,981 &#8212; its considerably smaller population (1,032,949) means Big Sky Country\u2019s per-capita risk rises much higher than the per-capita risk for California (nearly 16.5 homes per 1,000 residents) or Texas (nearly 19.4 homes per 1,000 residents).<\/span><\/p>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWildland and rangeland fires are hazards that impact Montana every year. In mild fire seasons, there may be relatively small timber and crop &#8230; losses. In extreme years, there can be resource devastation, habitat destruction, structure losses and deaths,\u201d according to a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/letsmitigatemontana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Section-4.4.1_Wildland-and-Rangeland-Fires_final.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2013 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issued by the State of Montana. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of Montana is vulnerable in one form or another to wildland and rangeland fires.\u201d<\/span><\/p>    <p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OxcDxp07okc\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>    <p>In fact, wildfire has been <a href=\"http:\/\/serve.mt.gov\/ready-montana\/montana-hazards\/\">cited as the No. 1 natural hazard<\/a> in Montana.<\/p>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2004 study by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management found that nearly 39 percent of 622 communities in Montana were in the \u201cextreme\u201d or \u201chigh\u201d risk category for wildfires. The risk is especially prominent in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildlandfirersg.org\/About\/Wildland-Urban-Interface\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildland-urban interface<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> areas, where homes encroach on wildfire-prone lands.<\/span><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Close to Home<\/h3>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The State of Montana report cautions that when people build or buy homes in high-hazard fire areas, \u201ctheir homes are potential fuel.\u201d Among the factors increasing the fire wildfire risk to people and property are inadequate water supplies, poorly planned subdivisions and untreated roofs made of wood, the report says.<\/span><\/p>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWildfire used to be something you could see from the road or read about in the newspaper. Now [the fires] are getting close to home,\u201d Derek Yeager, fire management officer for Montana\u2019s Southern Lands Office, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/billingsgazette.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/montana\/montana-wildfires-burn-most-acreage-since-m-spent-to-battle\/article_88b22157-7b4b-5b0b-9951-9732801e7fe7.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told the Billings Gazette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added: \u201cA lot of land in Montana is just not resilient, and it\u2019s not getting any more resistant to fire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ranking of Riskiest States<\/h3>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Montana in the No. 1 position, here\u2019s our per-capita ranking of the \u201cextreme\u201d or \u201chigh\u201d fire risk for single-family homes in the 13 states highlighted by CoreLogic.<\/span><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.
