These cities tend to be the most progressive \u2014 at least at the municipal level \u2014 so feel free to say \u201cgay\u201d here. Although generally not the most affordable, our top performers boast strong LGBTQ+ communities.<\/p>    <p>All but nine of our <strong>50 bottom cities<\/strong>, on the other hand, are located in the <strong>South<\/strong>. Although the region is hailed for its warm, welcoming vibe, our data suggests otherwise for LGBTQ+ incomers. The South tends to impose unwelcoming policies on and lacks helpful resources for its queer community. <strong>Florida<\/strong>, <strong>Georgia<\/strong>, and <strong>Texas cities<\/strong> make up the <strong>bottom 10<\/strong>.<\/p>    <p>There are, of course, exceptions on both ends.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standout Stats<\/h3>    <p><strong>True Colors<\/strong><\/p>    <p><strong>Alaska <\/strong>is the <strong>only red state<\/strong> among the 20 states (plus the District of Columbia) that have <strong>not passed<\/strong> at least one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/translegislation.com\/bills\/2023\/passed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>83 anti-transgender bills<\/strong><\/a> introduced in 2023 (at the time of data collection). Three are <strong>purple (swing) <\/strong>states: <strong>Nevada<\/strong>, <strong>New Mexico<\/strong>, and <strong>Virginia<\/strong>. So far, <strong>North Dakota<\/strong> has passed the <strong>most bills<\/strong>, 11.<\/p>    <p><strong>LGBTQ-Unfriendly Florida&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Of the <strong>18 states<\/strong> with active <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/policy-politics\/which-states-are-considering-dont-say-gay-bills-and-where-they-stand\/2023\/02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bills<\/strong><\/a>, only <strong>Florida<\/strong> has <strong>passed<\/strong> such legislation.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p><strong>Sunny Safe Havens<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Despite Florida\u2019s unwelcoming politics, <strong>Fort Lauderdale <\/strong>(No. 18 overall) is home to the <strong>biggest concentration of same-sex households<\/strong> among the 200 biggest U.S. cities. <strong>St. Petersburg <\/strong>(No. 110), <strong>Hollywood <\/strong>(No. 168), <strong>Tallahassee <\/strong>(No. 162), and <strong>Orlando <\/strong>(No. 34) aren\u2019t far behind. Several of these cities are popular gay travel destinations.<\/p>    <p><strong>Georgian Contradiction<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Of our top 10 cities, only <strong>Atlanta <\/strong>(No. 10) ranked in the <strong>bottom half<\/strong> of our <strong>Equality<\/strong> category, at No. 128. Despite <strong>Georgia<\/strong>\u2019s unfriendly policies toward its LGBTQ+ residents, those living in The Big Peach can feel safe and welcome \u2014 Atlanta ranked 2nd in <strong>Community Support<\/strong>. The city also boasts the<strong> 2nd-highest concentration of same-sex households<\/strong>.<\/p>    <p><strong>Twins of a Different Cloth<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Some \u201ctwin\u201d cities performed differently in our ranking \u2014 one tends to be more inclusive and progressive than its sibling.<strong> <\/strong>Among the duos with the biggest gaps in overall rank are <strong>Minneapolis<\/strong> (No. 19) and <strong>St. Paul, Minnesota<\/strong> (No. 68); <strong>Dallas<\/strong> (No. 57) and <strong>Fort Worth, Texas<\/strong> (No. 129); and <strong>Fort Lauderdale<\/strong> (No. 18) and <strong>Miami, Florida<\/strong> (No. 144).<\/p>    <p><strong>Battle of the Sixes<\/strong><\/p>    <p>In Utah, <strong>Salt Lake City<\/strong> (No. 20 overall) and its suburb <strong>West Lake Valley<\/strong> (No. 185) landed on opposite ends of our <strong>Health Care Access<\/strong> category. <strong>SLC<\/strong> placed <strong>6th best<\/strong>, whereas <strong>WVC<\/strong> placed <strong>6th worst<\/strong>. This outcome may be a reflection of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/religion\/2018\/12\/09\/salt-lake-county-is-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declining<\/a> Mormon population in Salt Lake City and its continued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldatlas.com\/cities\/west-valley-city-utah.html#:~:text=West%20Valley%20City%20has%20a,with%20Mormonism%2C%20at%2061%25.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">domination<\/a> in West Valley City.<\/p>    <p><strong>Waterful Drinking Holes<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Stay hydrated during Pride in one of the cities with the <strong>highest concentrations of gay bars and clubs<\/strong>. Strangely, <strong>eight <\/strong>of the 10<strong> best cities <\/strong>in this metric are <strong>by water<\/strong>. In first place is <strong>New Orleans <\/strong>(No. 53 overall), followed by other seaside or riverside cities like <strong>San Francisco <\/strong>(No. 1), <strong>Providence, Rhode Island <\/strong>(No. 15), <strong>Pittsburgh <\/strong>(No. 8), and <strong>Seattle <\/strong>(No. 3).<\/p>    <p><strong>Rest Easy<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Transgenders, genderqueers, and gender non-conformists can easily find <strong>inclusive restrooms<\/strong> in the <strong>biggest U.S. cities<\/strong>. Half of the 10 cities with the <strong>fewest<\/strong> gender-neutral bathrooms at bars and restaurants, however, are in the <strong>Midwest<\/strong>, such as <strong>Warren, Michigan <\/strong>(No. 157), <strong>Kansas City, Kansas<\/strong> (No. 124), and <strong>Akron, Ohio<\/strong> (No. 101). The other half are mostly in the South.<\/p>    <p><strong>The Party Never Stops<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Missed your city\u2019s Pride festival? Head to The City That Never Sleeps \u2014 once the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/06\/08\/upshot\/new-york-city-smoke.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian wildfire smoke<\/a> clears. <strong>New York<\/strong> has <strong>nine Pride events<\/strong> scheduled throughout the year \u2014 mostly during the warmer months \u2014 and those are just the major shindigs. Check your local event calendars for smaller affairs. <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> (No. 12) and <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> (No. 17) are good options for westward travelers.<\/p>     <p><a class=\"js-anchor\" id=\"ask-the-experts\"><\/a><\/p>  <div id=\"experts-block\" class=\"experts\">     <h2 class=\"text-2xl font-bold text-black mb-3\">Ask The Experts<\/h2>    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since achieving marriage equality, politics and the pandemic have reshaped the way LGBTQ+ people live. This includes our sexuality, gender, race, national origin, faith, and more. Keep in mind that a \u201cgayborhood\u201d may feel like home to some and not others. Support should not be clustered in a single area but spread throughout the city.<\/span><\/li> <li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> There is concrete support, not just symbolic support. Concrete: actionable laws, policies, and practices to protect LGBTQ residents. Symbolic: flying a flag but not doing much else.<\/span><\/li> <li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The best LGBTQ city must be immigrant-friendly. Gender and sexual rights and protections must be available to all people and not limited to citizens.<\/span><\/li> <\/ol> <p><strong>What can cities do to protect their LGBTQ communities from statewide anti-LGBTQ legislation?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Cities do have some leeway to protect their residents, and there is a historical precedent for this.<\/p> <p>For example, in my state \u2014 Michigan \u2014 some cities passed ordinances prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation before the state did. Leadership and the spark for change often happen at the city level.<\/p> <p><strong>What are your top three tips for someone who is planning to attend their local pride festival for the first time this year?<\/strong><\/p> <p>1. Share the experience with your loved ones if you feel comfortable doing so. Some people have major misconceptions about pride. Your story may help them to open their minds and hearts.<\/p> <p>2. Affirming Healthcare, including hospitals and clinics as well as individual providers. There is nothing worse than going to the ER and having the providers decide your health problems must be connected to your HIV status.<\/p> <p>3. An affirming (not merely tolerant) spiritual community and churches.<\/p> <p><strong>What can cities do to protect their LGBTQ communities from statewide anti-LGBTQ legislation?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Make sure that sexual identity and gender performance is included in the city&#8217;s and county&#8217;s antidiscrimination policies and those are applied for housing, employment, and commerce.<\/p> <p>Cities and counties should have some LGBTQ+ representation on their councils, school boards, and committees. Leadership\u2014specifically mayors\u2014should be affirming and even celebratory when it comes to Pride Month, the Arts, Theater and LGBTQ+ local history. Leadership can encourage respect for individuals and groups and support businesses that are &#8220;gay friendly.&#8221;<\/p> <p>Support individuals who may be fighting discriminatory legislation with legal representation and by not conceding state legislation that goes against the city&#8217;s values and ordinances. Don&#8217;t cancel public events out of fear of reprisals.<\/p> <p><strong>What are your top three tips for someone who is planning to attend their local pride festival for the first time this year?<\/strong><\/p> <p>1. Have fun, wave a flag, cheer, wear a rainbow.<\/p> <p>2. I have not felt unsafe at Pride Events for at least the past 10 years, so my tips are what I would say for anylarge event: don&#8217;t drink too much alcohol, remember where you parked, don&#8217;t go off with strangers\u2014no matter how good looking.<\/p> <p>3. If you liked the event, seek out the organizers and get involved in the next year&#8217;s planning.<\/p> <p><strong>What is your best piece of advice for LGBTQ people who are looking for a community or safe space in states with anti-LGBTQ policies?<\/strong><\/p> <p>I live in a state with anti-LGBTQ+ policies, but the community I live in is safe. Do not write off an entire state because we need LGBTQ+ individuals to fight alongside with us.<\/p> <p>You can find people to talk to on Social Media, and look for the &#8220;Gay&#8221; newspaper, an LGBTQ+ Center, an affirming church and affirming employers. Ask the LGBTQ+ people who have lived in the area for a number of years why they live there and why they stay.<\/p> <p>Visit the area a number of times and look for those things that you enjoy for leisure\u2014sports, arts, theater, music\u2014are there LGBTQ+ people involved?<\/p> <p><strong>How can local businesses and leaders help make their communities more inclusive and safe for LGBTQ people?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Think about how you present yourselves to the public.<\/p> <ul> <li>How can your signage, advertisements, brands, etc. be more inclusive?<\/li> <li>You may be Christian, but is that the most important thing about your business? (Understand that &#8220;Christian&#8221; is a trigger for many people in the LGBTQ+ community.)<\/li> <li>How do you treat your employees? What messages do they receive about their inclusion?<\/li> <\/ul> <p>If your businesses and stores are welcoming to everyone \u2014 and it shouldn&#8217;t matter if you are a single business or part of a chain \u2014 you have created an inclusive community.<\/p>             <\/div>            <\/div>          <\/div>              <\/div> <\/div>  <p><a class=\"js-anchor\" id=\"methodology\"><\/a><\/p>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Behind the Ranking<\/h2>    <p>First, we determined the factors (metrics) that are most relevant to rank the Most LGBTQ-Friendly Cities. We then assigned a weight to each factor based on its importance and grouped those factors into five categories: Equality, Community Support, Affordability, Health Care Access, and Pride-Readiness. The categories, factors, and their weights are listed in the table below.<\/p>    <p>For each of the 200 biggest U.S. cities, we then gathered data on each factor from the sources listed below the table.<\/p>    <p>Finally, we calculated scores (out of 100 points) for each city to determine its rank in each factor, each category, and overall. A city\u2019s Overall Score is the average of its scores across all factors and categories. The highest Overall Score ranked \u201cBest\u201d (No. 1) and the lowest \u201cWorst\u201d (No. 200).
