Before we get started, let\u2019s take two seconds for a quick biology lesson. Mosquitoes go through four stages of life: (This will be important later on when we discuss how best to control them.)<\/p>
- Egg <\/li>
- Larva <\/li>
- Pupa <\/li>
- Adult <\/li><\/ul>
Depending on the species and temperature, this process can take from four days to one month<\/a>, but many species reproduce in 7-10 days during warmer temperatures. Since warmer temperatures in Florida last from April through October<\/a>, you’ll need to be especially attentive to mosquitoes in your yard during this time.<\/p>
Note:<\/strong> The mosquitoes we\u2019ll discuss in this article are \u201cstanding-water mosquitoes.\u201d There is another group, floodwater mosquitoes<\/a>, that lay eggs in moist soil (not standing water) and are the type that arises with a vengeance after hurricanes or floods. <\/p>

Since mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, it\u2019s wise to empty all standing water on your property. Female mosquitoes need only a bottle cap\u2019s worth of water<\/a> — or about 1 teaspoon — to lay their eggs. Eliminate sources of water in the lawn to ensure your property doesn\u2019t become a mosquito breeding factory. <\/p>
Don\u2019t underestimate the impact of emptying standing water around the yard. Mosquitoes are prolific breeders. One female Culex quinquefasciatus<\/em><\/a> mosquito may lay as many as 300 eggs at once. She\u2019ll do this up to seven times in her six-week lifespan. <\/p>
Consequently, simply getting rid of standing water will prevent thousands of these eggs from turning into adults and starting the cycle all over again.<\/p>
Here are a few things in your yard and around your house that you\u2019ll need to empty twice per week<\/a> during the summer<\/p>
- Bird baths<\/strong><\/li>
- Buckets<\/strong> – Even buckets that are turned over can collect water if they have a lip around the rim. Place them in a covered area to prevent this.<\/li>
- Gutters<\/strong> – Clean them out to remove clogs and standing water<\/li>
- Kid and pet pools<\/strong><\/li>
- Pet water bowls<\/strong><\/li>
- Plant saucers<\/strong><\/li>
- Tires<\/strong> (or drill holes<\/a> in them so water doesn\u2019t collect in the first place)<\/li>
- Water-holding plants: <\/strong>bromeliads<\/a>, bamboo, fallen leaves, and palm spathes (Yes, even a single leaf <\/strong>can hold enough water for a mosquito to lay her eggs!)<\/li><\/ul>
Pro Tip: <\/strong>Who has time to empty containers of water twice per week? The solution: Do a cleanup. Take old tires to a recycling facility, place unused buckets in a shed, and place pots on the ground so there\u2019s no need for a saucer that will retain water after a rainstorm.<\/p>
Cover Containers<\/h2>
If you don\u2019t want to empty certain items such as kiddie and pet pools, cover them instead. <\/p>
Here are a few items that you can cover to prevent mosquitoes from laying their eggs there.<\/p>
- Cisterns and drums<\/strong><\/li>
- Gutters<\/strong> – Cover with leaf guards to keep debris out and prevent clogs<\/li>
- Kiddie and pet pools<\/strong><\/li>
- Plumbing pipes that come out of the ground<\/strong><\/li>
- Rain barrels<\/strong><\/li>
- Septic tanks<\/strong><\/li>
- Tree cavities <\/strong>— Fill with expandable foam<\/a> to prevent water from collecting inside.<\/li><\/ul>

It may not be possible to eliminate all standing water from your yard. And you\u2019ll still encounter some adult mosquitoes despite your best efforts. <\/p>
Here are ways to kill larvae and adult mosquitoes in your lawn:<\/p>
How to get rid of mosquito larvae <\/h3>
A key way to control mosquitoes in Orlando is to treat standing water with a larvicide<\/a>. Larvicides are insecticides that kill mosquitoes in the larval stage to prevent the mosquito eggs from developing into pupae or adults. <\/p>
One common larvicide is Bacillus thuringiensis <\/em>subspecies israelensis<\/em><\/a> or Bti for short. Bti is a bacteria that is often used by organic farmers, is safe when used according to the label, and has been used to control mosquitoes for over three decades. Better yet, you can probably find it at your local big box store, and it\u2019s very easy to find online. It\u2019s available in dunks, granules, liquid, and other forms.<\/p>
Here are a few places where Bti granules, dunks, or other larvicides can be used to treat standing water:<\/p>
- Bird baths:<\/strong> Yes, Bti is safe for use with bird baths<\/a> <\/li>
- Ditches<\/strong><\/li>
- Open rain barrels <\/strong><\/li>
- Plants such as bromeliads<\/strong> (Sprinkle granules<\/a> in the water-holding area of the plant.) <\/li>
- Puddles or areas of pooling water in the lawn<\/strong> (A permanent drainage solution is advisable for long-term control.)<\/li>
- Tires<\/strong> (until you can get them to the recycling center) <\/li><\/ul>
How long do larvicides last?<\/strong> It depends on the product. Bti granules may need to be applied as often as every 7 days in peak season, while dunks last about 30 days.<\/p>
How to get rid of adult mosquitoes<\/h3>
Here are a few ways to control the adult mosquito population in your lawn:<\/p>
- Keep grass and weeds trimmed to an appropriate height. <\/strong>(Adult mosquitoes<\/a> rest in dark, moist, cool areas during the day, including overgrown vegetation.)<\/li>
