Mosquitoes go through four stages of life: (This will be important later on when we discuss how best to control them.)<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Egg&nbsp;<\/li><li>Larva&nbsp;<\/li><li>Pupa&nbsp;<\/li><li>Adult&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>    <p>Depending on the species and temperature, this process can take from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mosquito.org\/page\/lifecycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four days to one month<\/a>, but many species reproduce in 7-10 days during warmer temperatures. Female mosquitoes need only a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/spill-the-water\/#:~:text=mosquitoes%20can%20breed%20in%20as%20little%20as%20one%20teaspoon%20or%20a%20bottle%20cap%20of%20water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bottle cap\u2019s worth of water<\/a> &#8212; or about 1 teaspoon &#8212; to lay their eggs. Eliminate sources of water in the lawn to ensure your property doesn\u2019t become a mosquito breeding factory.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Don\u2019t underestimate the impact of emptying standing water around the yard. Mosquitoes are prolific breeders. One female <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.arizona.edu\/sites\/extension.arizona.edu\/files\/pubs\/az1221-2013.pdf#page=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Culex quinquefasciatus<\/em><\/a> mosquito may lay as many as 300 eggs at once. She\u2019ll do this up to seven times in her six-week lifespan.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Consequently, simply getting rid of standing water will prevent thousands of these eggs from turning into adults and starting the cycle all over again.<\/p>    <p>Here are a few things in your yard and around your house that you\u2019ll need to empty <a href=\"https:\/\/edis.ifas.ufl.edu\/publication\/IN1045#:~:text=in%20florida%2C%20it%20is%20best%20to%20flush%20out%20containers%2C%20such%20as%20bird%20baths%20and%20bromeliad%20plants%2C%20every%20three%20to%20four%20days%20during%20the%20summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">twice per week<\/a> during the summer<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Bird baths<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Buckets<\/strong> &#8211; Even buckets that are turned over can collect water if they have a lip around the rim. Place them in a covered area to prevent this.<\/li><li><strong>Gutters<\/strong> &#8211; Clean them out to remove clogs and standing water<\/li><li><strong>Kid and pet pools<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Pet water bowls<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Plant saucers<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Tires<\/strong> (or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/orangeco\/2017\/10\/17\/florida-friendly-mosquito-control-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drill holes<\/a> in them so water doesn\u2019t collect in the first place)<\/li><li><strong>Water-holding plants: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/edis.ifas.ufl.edu\/publication\/IN1343\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bromeliads<\/a>, bamboo, fallen leaves, and palm spathes (Yes, even a single leaf<strong> <\/strong>can hold enough water for a mosquito to lay her eggs!)<\/li><\/ul>    <p><strong>Pro Tip: <\/strong>Who has time to empty containers of water twice per week? The solution: Do a cleanup. And you\u2019ll still encounter some adult mosquitoes despite your best efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Here are ways to kill larvae and adult mosquitoes in your lawn:<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get rid of mosquito larvae&nbsp;<\/h3>    <p>A key way to control mosquitoes in Orlando is to treat standing water with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mosquitoes\/mosquito-control\/community\/larvicides.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">larvicide<\/a>. Larvicides are insecticides that kill mosquitoes in the larval stage to prevent the mosquito eggs from developing into pupae or adults.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>One common larvicide is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mosquitoes\/pdfs\/bti-508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Bacillus thuringiensis <\/em>subspecies <em>israelensis<\/em><\/a> or Bti for short. Bti is a bacteria that is often used by organic farmers, is safe when used according to the label, and has been used to control mosquitoes for over three decades. Better yet, you can probably find it at your local big box store, and it\u2019s very easy to find online. It\u2019s available in dunks, granules, liquid, and other forms.<\/p>    <p>Here are a few places where Bti granules, dunks, or other larvicides can be used to treat standing water:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Bird baths:<\/strong> Yes, Bti is safe for use with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/mosquitocontrol\/bti-mosquito-control##3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bird baths<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Ditches<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Open rain barrels&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Plants such as bromeliads<\/strong> (Sprinkle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/SUMMIT-CHEMICAL-117-6-30OZ-Mosquito\/dp\/B0001AUF8G\/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=bti+granules&amp;qid=1651241965&amp;sr=8-2-spons&amp;psc=1&amp;spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFCRTM2M0JTMUxKVjAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA2NjQwODZPV0NKMUg2R1RPWlgmZW5jcnlwdGVkQWRJZD1BMDYyNDI2MjNOUzdTR0dDT0wyVEomd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">granules<\/a> in the water-holding area of the plant.)&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Puddles or areas of pooling water in the lawn<\/strong> (A permanent drainage solution is advisable for long-term control.)<\/li><li><strong>Tires<\/strong> (until you can get them to the recycling center)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>    <p><strong>How long do larvicides last?<\/strong> It depends on the product.
