Cities like <strong>Durham<\/strong>, <strong>North Carolina<\/strong> (No. 1), <strong>Milwaukee<\/strong> (No. 3), and <strong>Mobile<\/strong>, <strong>Alabama <\/strong>(No. 4), finished at the top with <strong>high occupancy rates<\/strong> and <strong>high revenue potential<\/strong>, as well as the <strong>fewest legal restrictions<\/strong>.<\/p>    <p>A total of <strong>30 California cities<\/strong> landed in the <strong>bottom half<\/strong> of our ranking \u2014 including <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> (No. 173), <strong>San Francisco<\/strong> (No. 178), and <strong>Huntington Beach<\/strong> in last place \u2014 mainly due to <strong>high Initial Investment<\/strong> and <strong>Operating Expenses<\/strong>, on top of stern <strong>legal restrictions<\/strong>. With <a href=\"https:\/\/granicus.com\/blog\/are-short-term-vacation-rentals-contributing-to-the-housing-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">housing shortages<\/a> impacting local residents, many Golden State cities have cracked down on STR legality to encourage long-term leases and local homeownership. The state government is also considering <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/capitol\/2023\/05\/airbnb-tax-california-housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taxing STRs<\/a>.<\/p>    <p>Across all 182 big cities in our ranking, the <strong>average STR occupancy rate<\/strong> was <strong>42%<\/strong>, and the <strong>average annual revenue<\/strong> over the past 12 months was <strong>$18,691<\/strong>.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standout Stats<\/h3>    <p><strong>Top 10 Takedown<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>This year, we added a Legality category, reducing scores for cities with legal restrictions like <strong>permit requirements<\/strong>,<strong> rental-period<\/strong> and <strong>guest limitations<\/strong>, and <strong>rules<\/strong> on <strong>property type<\/strong>. This caused <strong>several<\/strong> of <strong>2022\u2019s top 10<\/strong> cities to <strong>tumble<\/strong> in this year\u2019s ranking, including <strong>New York<\/strong> (No. 118), <strong>New Orleans<\/strong> (No. 160), and <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> (No. 67). Last year\u2019s top city, <strong>Miami<\/strong>, <strong>dropped to No. 27<\/strong> due to permit requirements and <strong>reduced Revenue Potential<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Exotic Escapes<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Despite the distance, short-term getaways are lucrative in <strong>Anchorage<\/strong>, <strong>Alaska<\/strong> (No. 5), which raked in an average of <strong>$29,050<\/strong> over the past year \u2014 the <strong>23rd-highest revenue<\/strong> out of the cities in our ranking. On average, Anchorage BnBs bring in <strong>more income<\/strong> than those in larger tourist destinations like <strong>New Orleans<\/strong> (No. 160) and <strong>Chicago<\/strong> (No. 101). While the state is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akleg.gov\/basis\/Bill\/Detail\/33?Root=HB%20184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>considering<\/strong><\/a><strong> some constraints<\/strong> due to local housing <a href=\"https:\/\/alaskapublic.org\/2023\/05\/08\/people-could-only-own-one-short-term-rental-unit-in-alaska-under-new-house-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shortages<\/a>, there currently are no such restrictions impacting Anchorage.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Firm But Fruitful<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Boston<\/strong> (No. 125) boasts the <strong>highest Revenue Potential<\/strong> from STRs, bringing in an average of <strong>$61,445<\/strong> over the past year. That\u2019s <strong>over $2,000<\/strong> higher than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/business\/average-salary-by-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">average national salary<\/a> and nearly <strong>$13,000<\/strong> ahead of <strong>Charleston<\/strong>, <strong>South Carolina<\/strong> (No. 48), which claimed the <strong>2nd-highest<\/strong> <strong>average revenue<\/strong>, <strong>$48,713<\/strong>. Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2022\/07\/11\/short-term-rentals-decreasing-in-boston-priced-out-by-monthly-rents-per-city-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boston<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/charlestoncitypaper.com\/2023\/06\/16\/charlestons-short-term-rental-restrictions-become-new-standard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charleston<\/a> <strong>enforce red tape <\/strong>on STRs. However, South Carolina is <strong>considering a bill<\/strong> that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scstatehouse.gov\/sess125_2023-2024\/bills\/3253.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>prohibit local governments<\/strong><\/a> from regulating the STR market.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Order and Inflation<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Despite <strong>strict regulations<\/strong> and <strong>low occupancy rates<\/strong>, hosts can rake in the dough in <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> (No. 173). LA has <strong>busted<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-09-05\/airbnb-profits-are-rising-in-l-a-just-dont-ask-hosts-about-it#:~:text=As%20of%20August%2C%20there%20are%204%2C293%20active%20home%2Dsharing%20registrations%2C%20according%20to%20the%20city%E2%80%99s%20planning%20department.%20But%20on%20Airbnb%20alone%2C%20there%20are%20currently%207%2C360%20listings%20up%20for%20rent.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>thousands<\/strong><\/a><strong> of illegally operating STRs<\/strong>, and active hosts are taking advantage by <strong>hiking up rates<\/strong>. The City of Angels had the <strong>11th-highest <\/strong>average <strong>daily rate<\/strong> over the past year at <strong>$216<\/strong>.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Rental Restrictions<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Cities big and small are attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/cities-fighting-airbnbs-with-regulations-for-short-term-rentals-2022-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rein in<\/a> short-term rentals. <strong>11 cities<\/strong> \u2014 including <strong>Boston<\/strong> (No. 125), <strong>New York<\/strong> (No. 118), and less populated <strong>Sunnyvale<\/strong>, <strong>California<\/strong> (No. 181), and <strong>Springfield<\/strong>, <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> (No. 177) \u2014 <strong>tied at the bottom<\/strong> of the <strong>Legality<\/strong> category. These cities have implemented policies <strong>requiring permits<\/strong>, <strong>limiting<\/strong> the <strong>rental period<\/strong> and <strong>number of guests<\/strong>, and <strong>preventing<\/strong> STRs on <strong>non-owner occupied<\/strong> property. <strong>31 cities<\/strong> <strong>tied<\/strong> at the top with <strong>no legal barriers<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>New York Nightmare<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Until early September 2023, <strong>New York<\/strong> (No. 118) was an Airbnb empire, claiming the <strong>3rd-highest<\/strong> average <strong>annual revenue<\/strong> over the past year \u2014 <strong>$46,406 <\/strong>\u2014 and the <strong>most attractions<\/strong> to draw in guests. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/airbnb-new-york-city-new-rules-7d7fae6a900d0257d1f225f26fa82f76#:~:text=Under%20the%20new,are%20effectively%20barred.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>a recent clampdown<\/strong><\/a> has caused the <strong>removal<\/strong> of <strong>nearly <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/nyc-loses-15k-unlicensed-short-term-rentals-as-airbnb-rule-kicks-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>15,000 local listings<\/strong><\/a> from Airbnb between August and September 2023. With <strong>fewer restrictions<\/strong>, <strong>Yonkers<\/strong>, <strong>New York<\/strong> (No. 53), and <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> cities <strong>Paterson<\/strong> (No. 75) and <strong>Jersey City<\/strong> (No. 97) might be easier options for running an STR in the NYC metro area.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Risky Results<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Vacation rentals in <strong>Nashville, Tennessee<\/strong> (No. 68), lead with the <strong>highest average daily rate<\/strong>, <strong>$260<\/strong>, followed by <strong>Austin<\/strong> (No. 77) and <strong>Washington<\/strong> (No. 163). However, all three cities struggle with <strong>costly Initial Investments<\/strong>, <strong>legal limitations<\/strong>, and <strong>occupancy rates below 42%<\/strong>, the average across the cities we ranked. There are about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kxan.com\/news\/analyst-warning-of-local-airbnb-collapse-says-austin-has-more-rentals-than-homes-for-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>2.5 Airbnb properties<\/strong><\/a> for every housing unit for sale in Travis County, and the <strong>oversaturation<\/strong> of STRs may be driving the <strong>local Airbnb <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kvue.com\/article\/money\/economy\/boomtown-2040\/austin-experiencing-airbnb-collapse\/269-b8e96683-abec-48df-8daf-e5f57843c74c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>market crash<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Safer Stakes in the Suburbs<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Hialeah<\/strong>, <strong>Florida<\/strong> (No. 84), and <strong>Roseville<\/strong>, <strong>California<\/strong> (No. 104), tied for the <strong>highest occupancy rate<\/strong>, <strong>79%<\/strong>, over the past 12 months. However, hosts in these cities charged <strong>lower daily rates<\/strong> on average, likely due to <strong>lack of Entertainment Options<\/strong>. <strong>Corpus Christi<\/strong>, <strong>Texas <\/strong>(No. 169), had the <strong>lowest occupancy rate<\/strong> in our ranking at <strong>10%<\/strong>.<\/li> <\/ul>   <p><a class=\"js-anchor\" id=\"regional-insights\"><\/a><\/p>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regional Snapshots<\/h2>    <p><strong>Rust Belt Investments<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/r\/rust-belt.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rust Belt<\/a> cities in <strong>New York <\/strong>and <strong>Ohio <\/strong>stand out at the top of our ranking with <strong>high revenue<\/strong> over the past year and <strong>low Initial Investment costs<\/strong>. Hosts also benefit from low <strong>cost of living<\/strong> and <strong>Operating Expenses<\/strong>. <strong>Cleveland<\/strong> (No. 11) has the <strong>4th-best median listing price<\/strong>, and <strong>Syracuse<\/strong> (No. 12) and <strong>Rochester<\/strong> (No. 8) follow closely behind. <strong>Buffalo<\/strong> (No. 23), <strong>Cleveland<\/strong>, and <strong>Cincinnati<\/strong> (No. 15) also offer a <strong>high number of attractions<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Carolina Cabins<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>North Carolina <\/strong>cities <strong>Durham<\/strong> (No. 1), <strong>Winston-Salem<\/strong> (No. 6), and <strong>Charlotte<\/strong> (No. 10) finished in the <strong>top 10<\/strong>, with <strong>low Operating Expenses<\/strong> and <strong>high Revenue Potential<\/strong>. The state is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepilot.com\/news\/short-term-rental-bill-stalls-in-the-senate\/article_2efb783a-f8fe-11ed-aceb-db92bedd77bc.html#:~:text=Legislation%20introduced%20in%20the%20state%20Senate%20in%20early%20April%20aimed%20to%20prevent%20local%20governments%20from%20adopting%20or%20enforcing%20any%20prohibition%20on%20using%20residential%20property%20as%20a%20short%2Dterm%20rental.%20But%20it%20would%20also%20have%20given%20towns%20and%20cities%20a%20way%20to%20regulate%20such%20rentals%20that%20they%20don%E2%80%99t%20currently%20have.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>considering a bill<\/strong><\/a> that would <strong>prevent cities<\/strong> from <strong>enforcing legal restrictions<\/strong> on STRs. If successful, the remaining Tar Heel cities \u2014 <strong>Raleigh <\/strong>(No. 52), <strong>Fayetteville<\/strong> (No. 63), and <strong>Greensboro<\/strong> (No. 110) \u2014 are likely to move up in future editions of our ranking.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Texas Expenses<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>A bill is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox4news.com\/news\/proposed-bill-that-would-allow-state-to-overrule-cities-on-short-term-rental-rules-altered-after-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in the works<\/a> to <strong>study the impact<\/strong> of local regulations on STRs in Texas. A federal court recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austinmonitor.com\/stories\/2023\/08\/federal-court-rules-austins-short-term-rental-rules-unlawful\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>struck down<\/strong><\/a> the STR ordinance in <strong>Austin<\/strong> (No. 77), now allowing rentals on non-owner-occupied property, but hosts still need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austintexas.gov\/department\/license-my-short-term-rental#:~:text=Owners%20of%20Short%2DTerm%20Rentals,less%20than%2030%20consecutive%20days.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">license<\/a>. <strong>Dallas<\/strong> (No. 102), however, <strong>recently banned<\/strong> vacation rentals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox4news.com\/news\/dallas-short-term-rentals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">single-family neighborhoods<\/a>, <strong>eliminating <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox4news.com\/news\/dallas-short-term-rental-proposal#:~:text=The%20assistant%20director%20of%20code%20compliance%20told%20council%20members%20that%20would%20make%20about%2095%20percent%20of%20the%201%2C700%20rentals%20the%20city%20knows%20about%20illegal.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>95%<\/strong><\/a> of the city\u2019s STRs. While <strong>Houston<\/strong> (No. 25) is <strong>considering<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/communityimpact.com\/houston\/heights-river-oaks-montrose\/housing-real-estate\/2023\/07\/12\/houston-considers-regulating-short-term-rentals-as-tensions-grow-among-neighbors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>introducing constraints<\/strong><\/a>, none impeded hosts at the time of writing.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Blazing Accommodations<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Initial Investment<\/strong> costs are high in the <strong>Phoenix<\/strong> (No. 14) metro. Despite that, Phoenix had the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airdna.co\/blog\/hottest-us-short-term-rental-cities-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest STR growth<\/a> in 2023 and landed near the top of our ranking \u2014 alongside two of its suburbs, <strong>Mesa<\/strong> (No. 9) and <strong>Tempe<\/strong> (No. 13) \u2014 with <strong>high Revenue Potential<\/strong> and <strong>low Operating Expenses<\/strong>. Meanwhile, <strong>Scottsdale<\/strong> (No. 151), <strong>Peoria<\/strong> (No. 129), and <strong>Glendale<\/strong> (No. 124) fell in the ranks due to <strong>low Revenue Potential<\/strong>.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Affordable Alabama Avenues<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Birmingham<\/strong> (No. 2) and <strong>Mobile<\/strong> (No. 4) soared to the top with <strong>high Revenue Potential<\/strong> and <strong>low Initial Investment <\/strong>costs and <strong>Operating Expenses<\/strong>. Destinations such as Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach, and Panama City Beach that didn&#8217;t figure this out until it was too late are regretting their development decisions.<\/p> <p>So, My prediction is that destinations like Outer Banks, NC and Boulder, CO will steadily grow, but with limits set and moratoriums on new construction. The growth of new properties will be in new destinations, but also in VRBO and Airbnb to take advantage of existing opportunities without creating new accommodations.<\/p> <p><strong>In a market that\u2019s saturated with vacation rentals, how can an owner make theirs stand out from the competition?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Destination marketing gets the eyeballs to a website for booking, but visitors are looking for both value and convenience to make their choice. P1p fills one of the convenience gaps.<\/p> <p>Vacation renters don&#8217;t want to spend their afternoons stocking the fridge with fresh necessities from the crowded Walmart. They also want to be responsible and purchase local produce, which is farm fresh. Other such conveniences, coupled with the booking, could tip the balance.<\/p> <p><strong>What are your top three tips for people looking to invest in a vacation rental?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Location, location, location.<\/p> <ol> <li>First, the investment needs to fit a personal lifestyle rather than cash flow. So, pick a location that is attractive for the investor (activities, landscape, close to family).<\/li> <li>A location that isn&#8217;t saturated with VR. Values will appreciate, but where demand is high in saturated locations, older properties will be replaced with newer and higher-priced development. Eventually, investments will become replaced at a depreciated value.<\/li> <li>Finally, the location should have the destination stewardship mentality, which is that a destination should be a wonderful place to live with a sustainable plan to manage the vacation economy. More than one-third of the economy is dependent upon tourism, and the residents become resentful.<\/li> <\/ol> <p><strong>Some cities and states impose strict regulations on short-term rentals. How can hosts ensure they\u2019re following all applicable local and state regulations before advertising their space?<\/strong><\/p> <p>There are two obvious sources of this information. The first is the online marketing platform(s) they intend to use to advertise their property. In recent years, destinations have sued these online platforms for not collecting the required occupancy taxes, and the destinations have won.<\/p> <p>These lawsuits have put the marketing and sales platforms on notice that they need to pay attention to local and state regulations. A homeowner can read the conditions for listing a short-term rental, which most likely will include regulations that must be followed.<\/p> <p>Second, there is usually someone within the local government who handles the dissemination of local and state regulations and restrictions on short-term rentals. A homeowner who is considering a short-term rental offering should do their research, find this person or government division, and get to know the ins and outs of the regulations. Many of these regulations are in place to protect the homeowner.<\/p> <p><strong>What hidden costs, if any, should short-term rental owners watch out for?<\/strong><\/p> <p>There are many costs to a short-term rental that are not hidden but just left out of the cash flow equation. The cost of a rental turnover is a recurring expense that homeowners will incorporate into each rental.<\/p> <p>However, an owner must also consider maintenance, repairs, and wear and tear on the property over a longer period. It is good to have a depreciation schedule for all these assets separately \u2013\u2013 the property, appliances, furnishings, etc. \u2013\u2013 so that the life of the assets can be included in a rental pricing structure. Each rental should be paying the fair share of the costs the property owner must bear.<\/p> <p><strong>What are the top three amenities that will attract the most guests?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Beyond providing a clean and safe accommodation experience, a homeowner should consider the following.<\/p> <ol> <li>The top asset would be a surprisingly amazing view. These are difficult to come by and so are highly valued. A homeowner must be extremely aware, however, of the community and what effects the location of the great view has on the off-property views. <p>In North Carolina, the Ridge Law restricts structures to be no higher than the tree line due to the Sugarloaf condominiums in Western NC. Great views can create unsightly intrusions from offsite locations.<\/li> <li>The second would be unique and creative activities and experiences available within a reasonable radius of the property. After all, the destination location is a strong reason that motivates visitation. These \u201cattractions\u201d would not include go-cart tracks, hyped tourist gift shopping, etc.; instead, they would be local experiences that are unique to the destination.<\/li> <li>Finally, a variety of local food experiences. Are there options to provide vacationers with local farm products? Can visitors schedule farm visits and experience pick-your-own options for produce needed for their stay? Motivated travelers will optimize their searches by working a year or more in advance of the travel dates. <\/p> <p> The budget-conscious tourist may wait until the last minute to catch a deal but will need to be flexible. Vacation rental owners can stand out through staging, competitive pricing, and service, all of which should have the end goal of getting outstanding reviews of the property. <\/p> <p> First, when creating a listing profile for potential guests, owners should stage the property as if they were going to sell it. The problem is exacerbated by the supply chain issues and increased costs of housing, so there are fewer houses and rentals available.<\/p> <p>I don\u2019t have a crystal ball, but I expect that long term, the housing market and supply chain issues will correct themselves, thus enabling more houses on the market available to rent.<\/p> <p><strong>In a market that\u2019s saturated with vacation rentals, how can an owner make theirs <\/strong><strong>stand out from the competition?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Price and flexibility. Attention to detail. Owners can make their vacation rentals stand out by ensuring the rental is very clean and attractively furnished and providing several pictures to demonstrate that. In addition, aptly describing the property and all the amenities offered is key.<\/p> <p>Vacationers want all of their needs taken care of and a home that is \u201cwell stocked.\u201d Of course, waterfront property, a pool, or a hot tub would definitely make one\u2019s property stand out amongst others that don\u2019t offer that.<\/p> <p>The rental home should be a reflection of its natural surroundings. If you are making a beach house, then the house should have the feel of a beach house. If it is located in a remote wooded setting, it should have rustic d\u00e9cor. If you are near a theme park, have at least one room that is devoted to that theme.<\/p> <p>In general, your home should cater to the people that will rent it most frequently. Repeat business is the name of the game. We then assigned a weight to each factor based on its importance and grouped those factors into six categories: Legality, Revenue Potential, Initial Investment, Operating Expenses, Entertainment Options, and Guest Safety. The categories, factors, and their weights are listed in the table below.<\/p>    <p>For each of the 200 biggest U.S. cities, we then gathered data on each factor from the sources listed below the table. We eliminated 18 cities lacking sufficient data in a single category, resulting in a final sample size of 182 cities.<\/p>    <p>Finally, we calculated scores (out of 100 points) for each city to determine its rank in each factor, each category, and overall. A city\u2019s Overall Score is the average of its scores across all factors and categories. While places like New York aren\u2019t going so far as to ban short-term rentals, Airbnb is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/economy\/airbnb-sues-new-york-city-over-restrictions-on-short-term-rentals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suing<\/a> the City of New York over its new STR regulations, calling the rules a \u201cde facto\u201d ban.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>While Airbnb\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.airbnb.com\/airbnb-q2-2023-financial-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overall revenue<\/a> continues to rise, some hosts are seeing a major decrease in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/airbnb-hosts-say-bookings-fell-off-a-cliff-amid-influx-of-new-vacation-rentals-and-rising-prices-11666373242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">occupancy rates<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/wraltechwire.com\/2023\/09\/05\/is-airbnb-still-a-profitable-side-hustle-analyzing-the-numbers-and-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profits<\/a>. On top of everything, many travelers are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surfacemag.com\/articles\/airbnb-losing-its-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opting for hotels<\/a> instead of rentals, with widespread STR scandals like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.distractify.com\/p\/airbnb-host-kitchen-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hidden cameras<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.distractify.com\/p\/airbnb-host-kitchen-rules\">excessive rules<\/a>, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/travelers-slam-airbnb-chore-lists-mow-lawn-laundry-cleaning-fees-2022-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chore lists<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Some experts argue that targeting platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/technology\/2023\/6\/30\/23779862\/airbnb-collapse-housing-shortage#:~:text=And%20scapegoating%20short,a%20%E2%80%9Crounding%20error.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wouldn\u2019t do much<\/a> to improve the housing crisis.
