On top of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2020\/10\/23\/926815076\/americas-school-funding-crisis-budget-cuts-rising-costs-and-no-help-in-sight\">budget shortfalls<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/the-consequences-of-the-covid-19-pandemic-for-education-performance-and-equity-in-the-united-states-what-can-we-learn-from-pre-pandemic-research-to-inform-relief-recovery-and-rebuilding\/\">widening equity gaps<\/a>, social-distancing measures have forced educators to adapt to a completely new style of instruction virtually overnight.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>But students\u2019 and teachers\u2019 experiences vary widely across the U.S. Full or partial school closures have been mandated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/section\/multimedia\/map-covid-19-schools-open-closed.html\">seven states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico<\/a>. <\/p>    <p>Meanwhile, in four states \u2014 Arkansas, Iowa, Florida and Texas \u2014 in-person instruction must be available to all students, either full- or part-time. That\u2019s even more pressure piled on teachers.<\/p>    <p>LawnStarter reached out to educators directly to find out exactly how their classrooms and jobs have been impacted. [\u2026] My bed is my desk, and the only other chair available to me that wasn&#8217;t a tall stool was our patio chair. I sit in that, in front of the bed, with my closed bathroom door behind me.\u201d\u00a0<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p> <h3><strong>What are your strategies for keeping students engaged during virtual learning?<\/strong><\/h3> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI try to give them choice and flexibility. Some of them are night owls, so I make their assignments due in the evening rather than in the afternoon or morning.\u201d\u00a0<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cConstant communication, emails, texts, Google Classroom. Quick grading, lots of self-made videos on EdPuzzle.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI have intermittent material comprehension \u2018quizzes.\u2019 Not graded, just something like a straw poll or survey to keep kids engaged.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cHope and trust.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI use songs to keep kids engaged.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cBreak the ice, foster a community, create individual learning plans, and develop curriculum around shorter content.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI set the rules at the beginning and create a reward system for the students.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI encourage students to take advantage of discussion-based features on course websites like Canvas. I also use office hours to engage students in a more informal setting and encourage them to keep in touch with each other.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cFormative assessment using socrative.com that shows me their answers in real time, along with their name. This serves as a participation grade, but it also allows me to see where they are at as far as comprehension of the material.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI try to offer alternative assignments whenever possible, especially to attract students\u2019 attention and increase buy-in.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p> <h3><strong>What are the best practices for teaching only online or in a hybrid setting?<\/strong><\/h3> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI think it\u2019s important to be structured because consistency is the key to success. However, it\u2019s also important to give students grace and understand that this is a new experience for everyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cThe absolute best thing I can recommend is keeping an up-to-date gradebook, and make participation a part of the student&#8217;s grade. It is really the only way to keep students accountable when they are not in the same room with you.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cMaking yourself available for students to call on when they have a question or need something. Since this is new, things can get confusing, so they need to know I am on their side. Be understanding that some students may be dealing more with more stressful things at home.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cCommunicate. Hold students to a high standard. Hold fast to due dates so students have consistency. Contact guardians using multiple methods.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cFocus on well-being and relationships.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cBe sure to give students individual attention instead of just lecturing to the class as a whole.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cCommunicating with students and parents is more important than ever.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cDiscuss time-management strategies and communicate expected time-on-task for online learning activities.\u201d\u00a0<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cBreak learning into smaller chunks. Establish a pattern of activity and due dates. Describe expectations for online participation, communication, and netiquette. Provide technical support information.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cInstead of clicking \u2018End\u2019 on the Zoom call, I allow students to end it themselves. This gives students who want to stay behind to ask me questions in private (rather than \u2018in front\u2019 of the whole class) the opportunity to do so.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cRemind oneself that this is only temporary.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cHaving a reliable medium for assigning and receiving work is absolutely crucial. It&#8217;s important to regularly invite students into the process and check to see if they have any needs or if there are barriers to their involvement.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p> <h3><strong>Please explain why you would prefer to teach only in person, only online, or using a hybrid model during the pandemic, if given the choice.<\/strong><\/h3> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p> <h4><strong>Online only<\/strong><\/h4> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cOnline is the safest option until a vaccine is available.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cMore flexibility in scheduling.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI do not want to get sick, nor do I want to put my students at risk. But because that is not an option, online-only is the best choice. Everyone is safer that way. The teacher can focus all efforts on making virtual learning fun and keeping the students engaged. Splitting the teacher apart to online and in-person at the same time is absurd. And all-in-person right now is reckless and thoughtless.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p> <h4><strong>In-person only\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI wish I could teach in person, but I know that my school is not safe enough to do that. I would love to be in front of the students being energetic, hearing their voices, and having them raise their hands, but I know it wouldn\u2019t be safe.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cNothing beats being face-to-face with the students so that I can visibly see how they are responding to instruction.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cIn-person is simply more effective. I can respond to issues in real time.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cMy district doesn&#8217;t necessarily have the money for all the kids to have the technology they need at home.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cOnline and hybrid is disruptive to learning, and my students are only fully engaged while in a classroom setting.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cAs a special-education teacher, observations and conversations with students in person is the best. Hybrid is not working as the students are not working or completing assignments at home. They are behind and treat their e-Learning day at home as a day off.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cIf I had the proper training (our teachers were basically \u2018thrown into it\u2019 and told to figure it out), I might consider teaching virtually.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p> <h4><strong>Hybrid\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cAlthough teaching hybrid where most of my time is online, I still prioritize safety. While this has been more work for me, I understand and accept the hardship.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI like the freedom and atmosphere of being able to work from home.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cIt strikes a balance between both options. I can reach the most families this way.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cHybrid allows students to select the learning option that is best for them.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p> <h3><strong>Post-pandemic, would you prefer to continue teaching only online, go back to teaching in person, or teach in a hybrid environment?<\/strong><\/h3> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p> <h4><strong>Online only<\/strong><\/h4> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cAll-online could work well. I miss seeing my students and interacting in person. But I think this pandemic has shown how much time is needed for learning and how much time of class is simply free child care so a parent can go to work.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p> <h4><strong>In-person only<\/strong><\/h4> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cTechnology cannot replace a teacher. It is merely an augmentation to a teacher.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cIn person exclusively if the pandemic is truly over.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI would prefer in-person, because I miss the accessibility to my students and colleagues, as well as to normal resources.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p> <h4><strong>Hybrid<\/strong><\/h4> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cI would like to have some semblance of a hybrid learning environment, like a flipped classroom. Technology is still a great tool for our students to use to learn with.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p> <h3><strong>If the pandemic persists over the next couple of years or so, how should schools prepare differently to meet faculty, student and staff needs?<\/strong><\/h3> <p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cPay greater attention to teacher burnout and mental health, and provide more equipment at home for better online instruction.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cTeachers should be given designated paid plan time.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cThere needs to be a general online plan because it still feels like they&#8217;re building the plane while flying it.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cClear and effective communication would be most important. Things are constantly changing, which I understand, but those changes are sometimes not communicated effectively to staff. Often, the community knows about things before we do.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cMake sure that the technology that students need to keep up is available to them.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cWe need funds to make a safe school environment! We have had to implement safety measures with no federal help whatsoever, only to have the pandemic not under control so we are teaching from home anyways.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cWe need more teachers and fewer students per classroom.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul> <p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p> <p><!-- wp:list --><\/p> <ul> <li>\u201cThe schools may need to hire more teachers, as I am sure many will leave the profession.
