Who knew?<\/p> <p>Here&#8217;s how to use these household ingredients to make a homemade insect repellent to protect you: The Texas A&amp;M AgriLife Extension recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/agrilifeextension.tamu.edu\/faqs\/which-plants-repel-mosquitoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crushing the leaves<\/a> to extract the plant&#8217;s potent oils. Rub the oils on your skin or use them in a spray to keep away flying pests.<\/p> <p>To keep insects out of your garden, the\u00a0Cornell University Cooperative Extension recommends <a href=\"http:\/\/chemung.cce.cornell.edu\/resources\/companion-planting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">companion planting<\/a>. Citronella grass<\/h3> <p>Citronella grass, not to be confused with a &#8220;citronella plant,&#8221; wards off mosquitoes.<\/p> <p>Citronella oil, which is derived from citronella grass, is a popular ingredient in many commercial insect repellent products. The EPA registered citronella oil as an insect repellent in 1948.<\/p> <p>Which is more effective: Citronella candles or incense? According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8827606\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research study testing citronella<\/a>\u00a0candles and incense, the candles had an insect bite reduction rate of 42.3%. Lemon Eucalyptus<\/h3> <p>This natural repellent is extracted from the leaves of lemon eucalyptus trees.<\/p> <p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/westnile\/prevention\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommends oil of lemon eucalyptus<\/a> as an insect repellent. Oil of lemon eucalyptus contains PMD (para-menthane 3, 8 diol), its main bug-repelling factor.<\/p> <p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3059459\/#B33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review of plant-based repellent efficacy<\/a>, PMD provides high protection from insects over several hours.
