Homeowners need to consider the species, where to plant it and exactly how big it\u2019s going to get down the road.<\/p>    <p>\u201cThey\u2019re like puppies \u2014 they\u2019re like great Danes,\u201d says Ron Banks, sales manager at Taylor\u2019s Nursery in Raleigh. \u201cYou have to take into account that someday that dog gets pretty big and may outgrow your backyard.\u201d<\/p>    <p>Whether for their weak limb strength, large mature size that threatens homes, their tendency to aggressively colonize your neighborhood or their abundant messes and weird smells, here are five trees never to plant in the City of Oaks.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bradford Pear (Pyrus calleryana)<\/h2>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17322\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"504\" height=\"672\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/bradford-pear-trees-noricum-ccsa20.jpg\" alt=\"Bradford pear trees\" class=\"wp-image-17322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/bradford-pear-trees-noricum-ccsa20.jpg 504w, https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/bradford-pear-trees-noricum-ccsa20-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bradford pear trees showing their prone-to-breakage limbs. Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/noricum\/112971812\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Noricum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CC by SA 2.0<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>    <p>You\u2019re not likely to find many landscape professionals today that will recommend the Bradford pear for much of anything, and that\u2019s why it tops this list.<\/p>    <p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/nc-ipc.weebly.com\/pyrus-calleryana-bradford-pear.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Carolina Invasive Plant Council<\/a>&nbsp;lists it among problematic invasive species, noting the tree is native to China and Taiwan. It was brought to the country for experiments in fighting blight on native pear trees and quickly emerged as an ornamental favorite.<\/p>    <p>Unfortunately, its structural weakness makes its limbs prone to break from wind, ice and snow. Its blossoms smell so bad it\u2019s been nicknamed \u201ctuna on a trunk.\u201d &nbsp;It spreads so well that in just a few years, one tree can spawn a grove of Bradford pears in the lot next door.<\/p>    <p>Those issues are compounded by the carpet of white petals and little fruits you\u2019ll have to rake up, and the pungent smell that will cover your yard when those blooms come out in spring.<\/p>    <p>Ohio has already banned the sale and distribution of the Bradford pear, beginning in 2023. Indiana has indicated it will follow suit. Save yourself a lot of headaches and worry, and leave the Bradford pear out of your landscape plan.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima)<\/h2>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-17324\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/tree-of-heaven-800-jim-morefield-ccsa20.jpg\" alt=\"Tree of heaven\" class=\"wp-image-17324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/tree-of-heaven-800-jim-morefield-ccsa20.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/tree-of-heaven-800-jim-morefield-ccsa20-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/tree-of-heaven-800-jim-morefield-ccsa20-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Distinctive papery seed pods and a disagreeable aroma mark the tree of heaven, aka &#8220;stinking sumac.&#8221; Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/127605180@N04\/15632767210\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Morefield<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> CC by SA 2.0<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>    <p>An attractive deciduous tree that grows quickly to a maximum height of 80 feet may sound appealing to a homeowner planning a landscape, but the tree of heaven is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.ces.ncsu.edu\/2018\/07\/extensionyourservice-tree-of-heaven-maybe-not-so-much\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anything but<\/a>.<\/p>    <p>The tree is an invasive species&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umd.edu\/sites\/extension.umd.edu\/files\/_docs\/programs\/woodland-steward\/DNR_TreeOfHeaven.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">native to China<\/a>. It establishes easily and can grow virtually anywhere, making it thrive in urban environments.<\/p>    <p>It often establishes in sidewalks, cracks next to buildings and in retaining walls. Its decaying leaves even create toxic soil conditions to discourage anything else from growing. It, too, has a smell problem, as you might expect from a tree whose common name is &#8220;stinking sumac.&#8221; So don\u2019t be drawn in by this flowering ornamental tree. Before you know it, they\u2019ll be everywhere around your property, pushing out other plants.<\/p>    <p>You can get the same aesthetic value from some native species like sumac, hickory and black walnut (learn about more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/north-carolina\/raleigh-nc\/best-native-trees-plant-raleigh\/\">trees native to Raleigh<\/a>).<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">White Ash (Fraxinus americana)<\/h2>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-17325\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/576px-Fraxinus_americana_-_University_of_Kentucky_Arboretum_-_DSC09337.jpeg\" alt=\"White ash\" class=\"wp-image-17325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/576px-Fraxinus_americana_-_University_of_Kentucky_Arboretum_-_DSC09337.jpeg 576w, https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/576px-Fraxinus_americana_-_University_of_Kentucky_Arboretum_-_DSC09337-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Fraxinus_americana_-_University_of_Kentucky_Arboretum_-_DSC09337.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White ash<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>    <p>Unfortunately, it\u2019s not the tree\u2019s characteristics that make the white ash a tree that Raleigh homeowners should avoid. The culprit is an insect that kills them, the emerald ash borer.<\/p>    <p>Ash trees aren\u2019t invasive, but the borers are, and they\u2019re wreaking havoc across the U.S.<\/p>    <p>Taylor\u2019s Nursery discontinued their ash stock due to the pesky little insect, Banks says. All of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncagr.gov\/plantindustry\/Plant\/entomology\/EABFAQ.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Carolina<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/plant_health\/plant_pest_info\/emerald_ash_b\/downloads\/eab_quarantine_map.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most of the eastern U.S.<\/a>&nbsp;have quarantined the movement of ash tree wood in an effort to stop the borer\u2019s spread.<\/p>    <p>The trees can grow up to 90 feet tall,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/plants.ces.ncsu.edu\/plants\/fraxinus-americana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explains<\/a>&nbsp;the North Carolina extension service, and some cultivars are known for their amazing fall colors.<\/p>    <p>But the ash borers are claiming them in huge numbers. They were first spotted in North Carolina along the Virginia border in 2013, but since their introduction into the U.S. in 2002, they\u2019ve killed tens of millions of trees.<\/p>    <p>For homeowners in the capitol area, avoiding planting new ash trees will help curtail the spread of the killer insects.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos)<\/h2>    <p>It\u2019s not invasive, it\u2019s not susceptible to specific diseases or killer insects. You can&#8217;t even say it&#8217;s ugly, but the honey locust (pictured at top of page)&nbsp; is a tree that will give homeowners plenty of headaches, thanks to one weakness.<\/p>    <p>\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful tree, but it\u2019s very brittle,\u201d Banks says. \u201cThere\u2019s always something falling.\u201d<\/p>    <p>Unlike the Bradford pear, it\u2019s not big heavy limbs that threaten to fall, but an abundance of small twigs and limbs that come down with every strong wind, he explains.<\/p>    <p>The tree itself is in the pea family, the extension&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/plants.ces.ncsu.edu\/plants\/gleditsia-triacanthos\/\">says<\/a>, and it\u2019s covered with large thorns, though some cultivars are available without them.<\/p>    <p>Its big problem is cleanup. The extension won&#8217;t recommend it for landscapes due to the thorns and the numerous seed pods it drops.<\/p>    <p>So unless you like continually cleaning up the sticks and seed pods that will fall beneath it, avoid the honey locust in your Raleigh landscape.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mimosa (Albrizia julibrissin)<\/h2>    <p>The Mimosa tree\u2019s beautiful and numerous pink flowers make it a tempting choice for many homeowners, but this tree is classified as invasive in North Carolina, and its problems will soon outweigh its beauty for the homeowner who gets pulled in by those blooms.<\/p>    <p>They can reach&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.ncsu.edu\/goingnative\/howto\/mapping\/invexse\/mimosa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">50 feet in height<\/a>, with feathery, fern-like leaves.<\/p>    <p>In the summer, it will produce dangling seed pods that hang on all the way through winter, where animals spread them, and those seeds stay viable for many years.<\/p>    <p>And that\u2019s not the only way it will go about colonizing your neighborhood. It can also spread from root sprouts and often takes over forest edges with dense stands.<\/p>    <p>Some native species that can give you the best of the mimosa without all its baggage include the red buckeye and eastern redbud.<\/p>    <p>So if you\u2019re looking to add some height and interest to your home landscape,\u00a0trees are a great option.
