But what about those bugs you don\u2019t recognize? Are there tiny monsters lurking out of sight in your yard and home just waiting to pounce? You betcha!<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are six of the weirdest, wildest and scariest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/raleigh-nc-pest-control\">bugs that call Raleigh home<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Giant Mosquitoes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Psorophora Ciliata)<\/span><\/i><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These giant insects, locally called gallinippers, are the Godzillas of mosquitoes.<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlotte-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cramerpestcontrol.com\/blog\/scary-insects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cramer Pest Control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blames hurricane Florence for the onslaught. The dormant mosquito larvae hatched by the billions thanks to the floodwater in 2018. Gallinippers (pictured above) are a rare species, but you&#8217;ll know if you see one: They&#8217;re three times as large as typical mosquitoes. <\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also pack quite a punch: They&#8217;re able to bite through two layers of clothing. The good news? They\u2019re not known to carry any diseases that threaten humans.<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Females lay thousands of eggs, though most will die. Also called triatomines, they got the nickname \u201ckissing bugs\u201d from their habit of biting around peoples\u2019 eyes and lips while they sleep. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/chagas\/gen_info\/vectors\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warns these bloodsuckers can transmit Chagas, a disease once limited to South and Central America. When the kissing bug invaded the U.S., it brought Chagas with them.<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes the disease doesn&#8217;t show up until <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/chagas-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20356212\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 years after<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the bug has bitten. While the CDC estimates 300,000 people living with the disease are in the U.S., most were infected in parts of Latin America. Only a few cases from contact with the bugs in the U.S. have resulted in the disease. And the insects are so rare, homeowners around Raleigh shouldn\u2019t lose any sleep over their virtually zero chance of contracting Chagas.<\/span><\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Pampelmusen-Thrips_frontal.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">M.J.<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0\/de\/deed.en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CC by SA 2,0 DE<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrips may be the most common bug you\u2019ve never heard of, and you may have a hard time spotting them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re present on most flowers, but they\u2019re typically less than two millimeters long, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/2018\/06\/seven-fascinating-nc-arthropods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Carolina State University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entomologist Matt Bertone.<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While small, they\u2019re incredibly diverse, with more than 5,000 species worldwide. The ones you might find in your Raleigh backyard likely feed on plants, but some eat fungi or even kill and eat smaller arthropods.<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Several of those species are serious pests for plants, either from their eating habits or from plant viruses they spread like the tomato spotted wilt virus,&#8221; Bertone writes.<\/span><\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Maddison<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0\/deed.en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CC by SA 3.0<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The telephone pole beetle has a modern-sounding name, but it represents an ancient line of beetle that entomologists think has been around for more than 15 million years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The insect looks like an ordinary brown beetle, but it has an incredibly weird and complicated life cycle. It can reproduce in the larval stage. Once they reach adulthood, they\u2019re almost always female. Male telephone pole beetles only occur when a larva lays a single egg. That egg hatches and attaches itself to the mother, which it subsequently eats. Now that\u2019s something fit for a science fiction flick.<\/span><\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Pseudoscorpions (Pseudoscorpionida or Chelonethida)<\/span><\/h2>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized size-full wp-image-17180\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/pseudoscorpion.jpg\" alt=\"Pseudoscorpion\" class=\"wp-image-17180\" style=\"width:800px\" width=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/pseudoscorpion.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/pseudoscorpion-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/pseudoscorpion-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pseudoscorpion<\/figcaption><\/figure>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the name suggests, these small bugs resemble tiny scorpions, just without the scary, stinger-tipped tail. They do have the claws,&nbsp; and many species transmit venom through those claws to debilitate their prey. They\u2019re also anything but giant. Most are smaller than an eighth of an inch and don\u2019t pose any threat to people.<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They still have some scary traits, though. As Bertone notes, some tropical pseudoscorpions will hunt larger prey in packs as big as 175.<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have their romantic side, too, with a mating ritual that rivals those of the famous birds of paradise. First, the male and female dance, their claws interlocked, until the male lays a pack of sperm and the female dances over it. When she\u2019s ready to give birth, she lays eggs inside a pouch and sometimes wraps herself in a silken nest.<\/span><\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Beaded Lacewings (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berothidae-Lomamyia)<\/span><\/i><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are less common than the green and brown lacewings you\u2019ll see buzzing around your porch light, but beaded lacewings are still found throughout the state.<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s not their adult form that Bertone says is so fascinating, but their larval stage. Larval beaded lacewings only live in termite nests where they feed on the termite workers.&nbsp; And they have a very unusual way of hunting. They use a potent toxin that is ejected from their anus that incapacitates any termite worker in range. Talk about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">silent but deadly! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then it\u2019s a simple matter of wandering over to the unconscious termite and sucking it dry.<\/span><\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So next time you\u2019re searching for the cause of your wilting hydrangeas or cleaning up those old rotten logs in the backyard, look a little closer for some of these fascinating monstrosities.
