Prune spring-flowering shrubs soon after their flowers die off.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Late-blooming shrubs that flower in summer.<\/strong> These include spiraeas, potentillas, and smooth hydrangea. Prune them in late winter or early spring.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Remontant or \u201ceverblooming\u201d shrubs that bloom in spring and summer.<\/strong>&nbsp; These include shrub roses and certain varieties of hydrangea, such as Endless Summer. Thin and shape only as needed.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-44 from cache -->    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-how-often-should-i-prune-flowering-shrubs-\"><strong>How Often Should I Prune Flowering Shrubs?<\/strong><\/h2>    <p><strong>Generally, shrubs need maintenance pruning every two to three years,<\/strong> according to Professor John Ball, South Dakota State University Extension Forestry Specialist. More specifically: It depends on the shrub.&nbsp;Pruning flowering shrubs is critical to encourage flower growth. But is this an annual job or an occasional one?&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>For smaller, multi-caned blooming shrubs up to 6 feet high, Ball recommends removing one-third of the canes every two to three years. For larger blooming shrubs \u2014 up to 15 feet tall, for example \u2014 remove just one-fifth of the canes. This will keep enough young wood on the plant to encourage blooms from base to top.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-a-few-exceptions-\"><strong>A Few Exceptions<\/strong><\/h3>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Hydrangeas<\/strong> don\u2019t need <a href=\"https:\/\/today.oregonstate.edu\/news\/hydrangeas-play-pretty-role-garden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extensive pruning<\/a> unless you have to reshape the plant. Generally, all you need to do is deadhead the old flowers and remove dead wood when necessary.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Dogwoods<\/strong> generally don\u2019t need much pruning, either. But for those with vibrant stem color, such as red- or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/11-of-the-best-privacy-hedges\/#13-11-yellow-twig-dogwoods-best-for-winter-interest\">yellow-twig dogwoods<\/a>, yearly pruning of the oldest stems will intensify the color that occurs on new growth. Prune out the oldest <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.umass.edu\/landscape\/fact-sheets\/dogwoods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dogwood<\/a> branches in late winter or early spring.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Dead or damaged <\/strong>stems on all shrubs can be removed at any time of the year. But if you suspect disease, Ball recommends waiting until the plant \u2014 and the disease \u2014 are in their dormant season. There\u2019ll be less chance you\u2019ll unwittingly spread the disease.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-how-to-prune-flowering-shrubs-\"><strong>How to Prune Flowering Shrubs<\/strong><\/h2>    <p>If flowering shrubs haven\u2019t been maintained regularly, they may need extensive pruning to get back into flowering form, regardless of their flowering category. This approach to overgrown shrubs uses two basic methods: renewal pruning and rejuvenation pruning.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-renewal-pruning-\"><strong>Renewal Pruning<\/strong><\/h3>    <p>Renewal pruning is usually a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/hla\/sites\/yardandgarden\/renewal-pruning-has-immediate-delayed-rewards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three-year project<\/a> that consists of gradually removing all of a shrub\u2019s stems. Each year, you\u2019ll remove a third of the shrub\u2019s largest, oldest stems. This gradual process restores your shrub\u2019s beauty and flower-producing potential. By project\u2019s end, all the stems have been renewed.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-rejuvenation-pruning-\"><strong>Rejuvenation Pruning<\/strong><\/h3>    <p>For shrubs that are seriously overgrown or display poor flowering, a more dramatic method is in order. This is the time for rejuvenation pruning, in which the entire plant is cut back at once.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>For some dense, low-growing, flowering shrubs, such as spireas and potentillas, Ball recommends this approach every three years. They will come back and bloom profusely during the summer. Larger shrubs, such as lilacs, also can be rejuvenated in this way. But it will take several years for the shrub to recover and bloom again.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-pruning-tree-like-shrubs\">Pruning Tree-Like Shrubs<\/h3>    <p>Ball warns that renewal and rejuvenation pruning only apply to blooming shrubs that have numerous canes. Don\u2019t try it with tree-like shrubs with few stems, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/landscape-with-evergreen-shrubs\/\">evergreen shrubs<\/a> such as yews or arborvitae. Instead, treat those plants as trees and follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/best-time-trim-prune-trees\/\">guidelines for tree pruning<\/a>, in which you remove individual side branches rather than full stems.<\/p>   <p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zps9jpeN6qA<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-replacing-flowering-shrubs-\"><strong>Replacing Flowering Shrubs<\/strong><\/h3>    <p>Usually, with proper care, you can enjoy your flowering shrubs for many years. However, in some situations, removing the shrub is the best option. Some reasons to remove shrubs include:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Disease:<\/strong> While some diseases are easily treated, others, like <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umd.edu\/resource\/virus-diseases-shrubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virus diseases<\/a>, boxwood blight, and verticillium wilt, can be fatal.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Insect infestations:<\/strong> If not caught in time, infestations of scale insects (also known as mealybugs) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/pest-control\/how-to-get-rid-of-spider-mites\/\">spider mites<\/a> can kill a shrub.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Damage:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umd.edu\/resource\/what-causes-trees-and-shrubs-die\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Environmental factors<\/a>, such as drought, extreme cold, and storm damage can kill plants. Overwatering can cause root rot, and if your shrubs are close to a city street, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/road-rock-salt-reduce-plant-damage\/\">road salt<\/a> buildup can be fatal.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/cost\/bush-removal-price\/\">remove a bush or shrub<\/a>, dig out from the base of the plant, including the roots, and be prepared to remove an extensive root system on large, old shrubs. Be sure to correct any environmental issues if possible; if not, put the new shrub in a better spot. Then be sure to stay on top of regular shrub care.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-proper-pruning-techniques\">Proper Pruning Techniques<\/h2>    <p>Pruning shrubs is not like taking a hedge trimmer to the bushes in the front yard. Dealing with a densely branched plant can be intimidating, but if you take your time and use the proper tools and cuts, you\u2019ll get the job done. There are several pruning cuts you\u2019ll need to be aware of.<\/p>    <p><strong>Thinning.<\/strong> This entails cutting entire branches to the point of origin at the main branch or lateral branch. This stimulates growth in the lower buds. Most horticulture experts advise making the heading cut at a 45-degree angle. They deliver a clean cut that keeps tissue intact so sprouting can occur.<\/p>    <p><strong>Lopping shears<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/reviews\/best-loppers\/\">Lopping shears<\/a> are best for branches up to 1\u00bd inches in diameter. The lopper\u2019s long handles provide leverage for cutting thicker stems.<\/p>    <p><strong>Anvil pruners.<\/strong> Best for dead branches. This shear pairs one blade with a flat, anvil-like base that crushes the stems rather than providing a clean cut.<\/p>    <p><strong>Pruning saw.<\/strong> For stems over 1-inch diameter, a pruning saw will do the trick. Many are curved to increase cutting power.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"10-sanitize-your-pruning-tools\">Sanitize Your Pruning Tools<\/h3>    <p>While it\u2019s always good practice to clean your garden tools, you should go one step further with pruning tools and sanitize them.&nbsp; If there\u2019s a chance that you\u2019ll be pruning diseased plants, <a href=\"https:\/\/gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu\/care\/tools-and-equipment\/disinfecting-tools.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sanitizing your tools<\/a> will prevent the spread of disease to healthy plants.<\/p>    <p>Generally, your tools should be sanitized after you prune each plant. There are a variety of products available that do the job. Some common ones are:&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Ethanol or isopropyl alcohol<\/strong>. Better known as rubbing alcohol, this is an inexpensive and convenient disinfectant. Simply wipe (or dip) your pruning tools with a solution of 70% alcohol. The advantage is that you don\u2019t have to wait for it to be effective.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Chlorine bleach.<\/strong> To use, create a mix of one part bleach to nine parts water and soak the tools for 30 minutes. Effectiveness drops by half after a couple of hours, so you may need to make several batches for a big pruning job. Rinse afterward to prevent the tools from corroding.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Household disinfectants.<\/strong> This includes the commercial sprays and liquids on the market, as well as disinfectant wipes. But be aware that there has not been much research on their effectiveness against plant diseases.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"11-common-pruning-mistakes-\"><strong>Common Pruning Mistakes<\/strong><\/h2>   \n<table id=\"tablepress-306\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-306\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Correct<\/th><th class=\"column-2\">Incorrect<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-striping row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">\u25cf Make a few large cuts instead of many small cuts.<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">\t\u25cf Don\u2019t \u201cstub\u201d a plant by just lopping it off at the top. That encourages multiple replacement branches to grow.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">\u25cf Prune just above a healthy bud, with the bud pointing in the direction you want the plant to grow.
