Some say it should be cut lower than normal. Others say it should be cut the same height as usual. The principal snow mold <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.umass.edu\/turf\/fact-sheets\/snow-molds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diseases<\/a> are Microdochium patch, Coprinus snow mold, Typhula blight, and snow scald.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>It is an organic way to fight<\/strong> fungal growths of winter, no fungicides required. It should be followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/-\/media\/DEEP\/p2\/individual\/OrganicLawnCareCalendarPDF.PDF#page=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mowing low<\/a> with the first cut of spring.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>There is less growth<\/strong> that needs to be pushed aside by new grass in spring.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>It discourages meadow mice. <\/strong>The furry pests, also called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/pest-control\/vole-damage-lawns\/\">voles<\/a>, leave tunnels in your lawn you won\u2019t find until after the snow cover melts.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Aesthetics: <\/strong>\u201cA lawn just looks neater if it has that close cut before the snow settles down,\u201d writes respected New York Times gardening columnist Joan Lee Faust.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Allows more sunlight to reach the soil,<\/strong> which means warmer soil temps and an earlier green-up in spring.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Removes dead grass blades and debris&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>A natural way <\/strong>to encourage healthier grass, avoiding the use of chemicals<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Reduces thatch levels<\/strong><\/li> <\/ul>    <p>Those making the argument recommend these guidelines:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Instead of following the one-third rule, cut the lawn by half<\/strong>. So instead of going from 4 inches deep to 2 \u00bd, go from 4 inches tall to 2 inches.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Be careful not to cut it too low<\/strong>; those low patches will die before spring<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Mow until all the leaves have fallen <\/strong>from the trees<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Mow until the grass has stopped growing <\/strong>for the year.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-why-some-say-no-\"><strong>Why Some Say No<\/strong><\/h2>    <p>Setting mowing height too low can damage your lawn, other experts say:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Keep it normal <\/strong>when it comes to mowing height. Turf should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.k-state.edu\/turf\/resources\/lawn-problem-solver\/maintenance\/mowing\/#:~:text=First%20and%20Last%20Mowing%20of%20the%20Growing%20Season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neither<\/a> be cut short nor left long going into winter.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>The root systems become shorter and smaller<\/strong>, limiting the grass\u2019 ability to pull in water and nutrients from the soil. This is because there is a direct relationship between the grass height and the amount of roots it can maintain. This will reduce the amount of stress you put on the grass as it grows throughout the year.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-mowing-heights-by-type-of-grass-\"><strong>Mowing Heights by Type of Grass<\/strong><\/h2>    <p>The University of Minnesota Extension Service says homeowners should <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umn.edu\/lawncare\/mowing-practices-healthy-lawns#:~:text=What%20time%20of%20the%20year%20should%20I%20stop%20mowing%3F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keep mowing<\/a> grass at the proper mowing height until it stops growing. Danneberger<\/a>, Ph.D., professor at the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at The Ohio State University. \u201cThe key thing is to keep mowing until you no longer are taking off clippings.\u201d<\/p>    <p>The University of Missouri Extension <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.missouri.edu\/g6705#October\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommends<\/a> that cool-season grasses should be mowed at the same height \u201cuntil growth stops\u201d before winter.<\/p>    <p>The University of Nebraska Extension <a href=\"https:\/\/turf.unl.edu\/TurfAdvice\/Cool-season%20lawn%20calendar.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agrees<\/a>, stating, \u201cNever remove more than one-third of the total canopy height at one time,\u201d even as you prepare for winter.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-warm-season-grasses-\"><strong>Warm-Season Grasses<\/strong><\/h2>    <figure
