However, a lot more choices exist than ever, including more gold and variegated plants to add a little pizzazz.<\/p>    <p>\u201cYou can have a refined appreciation for texture and different shades of plants in shade gardens,\u201d she adds. \u201cRemember, it\u2019s always about complementing and contrasting. Don\u2019t put a dark blue hosta on dark mulch. You need to frame the plants to show them off.\u201d<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-assessing-the-amount-of-shade-and-light-\"><strong>Assessing the Amount of Shade and Light<\/strong><\/h2>    <p>Figuring out how much shade or sun your yard gets can get a little confusing. Before spending any money on garden plants or bushes, it\u2019s a good idea to scope out the different outdoor spaces of your lawn.<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Shade<\/strong>, in gardening terms, totals fewer than two hours of sun.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Full sun<\/strong> means you get six or more hours of direct sunlight each day. Those hours don\u2019t need to be consecutive: It could be two hours of morning sun and four or more in the afternoon.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Partial sun<\/strong> consists of four to six hours of sun a day.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Partial shade<\/strong> is two to four hours of sun per day.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Full shade<\/strong> means no direct sun. Don\u2019t give up, though: Indirect, reflected sun can provide sufficient light for some plants to photosynthesize and grow.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>To figure out how much sun your yard gets, go outside every hour starting at 7 a.m. Mark sections receiving sun or shade on a sketch of your yard. The results provide a foundation for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/gardening-2\/shade-garden-ideas\/\">shade garden ideas<\/a> and design. At different times of the year, the sun\u2019s angle differs; for example, southern exposures get more sun in the summer.<\/p>    <p>Or, if you\u2019d rather someone \u2014 or something \u2014 else figure it out for you, you can try one of the available apps. Examples include the <a href=\"http:\/\/hookmountain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sun and Shade Analyzer (SASHA)<\/a> and Sunseeker, which is available for both Apple and Android products. It\u2019s easier to plant such annuals because you won\u2019t be blasted with the hot sun as you prepare pots and beds. All the work such as fertilizing and watering is done in the shade.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Some of the most popular annuals for shady areas follow:&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Begonias<br><\/li>    <li>Periwinkle<br><\/li>    <li>Dahlia<br><\/li>    <li>Sweet alyssum<br><\/li>    <li>Coleus<br><\/li>    <li>Petunias<br><\/li>    <li>Impatiens<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-best-shrubs-for-shade-\"><strong>Best Shrubs for Shade<\/strong><\/h2>    <p>Reese has some favorite shrubs too. \u201cThere\u2019s a breeding revolution for reblooming hydrangeas with disease-free foliage,\u201d she says. \u201cThey are breeding these for more intense colors, too.\u201d They come in everything from dark pink to chartreuse to white. She also likes unusual forms of fatsia such as the following:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Spider web<br><\/li>    <li>Paper bush, or <em>Edgeworthia<\/em><br><\/li>    <li>Plum leaf azalea, or <em>Rhododendron prunifolium<\/em><\/li> <\/ul>    <p>To take care of all these shady plants\u2019 green leaves, Reese suggests imitating nature\u2019s natural mulch with leafy duff (debris) by adding light layers of organic material.<\/p>    <p>\u201cSupply extra water to compensate for competition with roots, and if you are determined to grow turfgrass under trees, be sure to select <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/growing-grass-shade\/\">shade-tolerant grass species<\/a> and do some judicious pruning to allow as much sunlight as possible,\u201d she adds.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-get-expert-local-advice-\"><strong>Get Expert, Local Advice<\/strong><\/h2>    <p>She also says to talk with your local Extension service or well-established gardening center. They will know what can grow locally and thrive better in shady areas.<\/p>    <p><strong>Use shade plants that contribute texture, form, and foliage color:<\/strong> These can add to curb appeal in shady spots, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/successful-shade-gardens-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mississippi State University<\/a> Extension Service. In dense shade areas, plant only those items tolerant of continuous low-light conditions. A light- or part-shade area can grow a bigger range of flowering plants.<\/p>    <p><strong>You may find that your choice isn\u2019t always the right one:<\/strong> \u201cI preach that you shouldn\u2019t go by the \u2018right plant, right place\u2019 mantra,\u201d Reese explains. \u201cIt\u2019s not about getting it perfect. Change it up from time to time. If something doesn\u2019t bloom or it gets bigger than it was supposed to, that\u2019s OK. It\u2019s a garden. Do something different next time.\u201d<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-faq-\"><strong>FAQ<\/strong><\/h2>    <div class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\"><div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1673250037115\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\"><strong>How Can I Prepare to Garden Under Trees?<\/strong><br\/><\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Reese suggests if you are going to be gardening under trees, pull out the loppers before you pick plants or lay mulch. She suggests pruning \u2014 or \u201climbing-up\u201d a tree \u2014 to allow penetration of early and late sunlight to promote growth and flowering.<br\/><br\/>\u201cVery few things will prosper in deep shade. Some things are perfect with just a few hours of sunlight,\u201d she says. You can do the following to limb-up your tree:<br\/><br\/>\u25cf By raising the height of the trunk before you get to the first limbs, you can get some more morning light.\u00a0<br\/><br\/>\u25cf To easily find some semi-shady areas, you can remove a single limb or just a very few limbs in the wrong spots.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1673250065479\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\"><strong>Can I Grow Vegetables in the Shade?<\/strong><br\/><\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Sure, but you\u2019ve got to choose the right ones. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tnstate.edu\/extension\/documents\/GrowingVegetablesinMiniGardensContainers.pdf#page=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Some crops<\/a>, such as leafy vegetables (lettuce, collards, cabbage), do better in shade than root vegetables such as beets, carrots, and radishes. However, cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes do not do as well in the shade. Other crops produce in shade, but their yield won\u2019t be as large.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1673250073878\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\"><strong>How do I Finish off my Shade Garden?<\/strong><br\/><\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">You can complete the look of your shade garden in many ways. You can use a large pot as a focal point. Or how about a birdbath, a water feature, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/trellis-ideas\/\">trellis<\/a>? A rock garden might work as well. You can also place pavers on the outside or lay down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/mulch-types-tips-guide\/\">mulch<\/a> within the bed.
