up?

Here in Northwest Georgia, the season slows down but does not completely stop. We focus on leaf cleanups, shrub trimming, mulch and pine straw refreshes, light property cleanups, and preparing equipment for the next season. We also use the slower months to review pricing, tighten routes, and improve our operating systems.

How do you manage your budget during peak season so it stretches into winter?

The biggest thing is not treating every dollar in the business account as available spending money. During the busy season, we set money aside for taxes, build a winter cash reserve, keep owner draws controlled, and work toward paying down equipment. I want the business to enter the slow season with several months of operating expenses available.

What is the biggest financial mistake you see other lawn pros make?

Spending peak-season cash as though peak revenue will continue all year. It is easy to add equipment payments, vehicles, subscriptions, and personal spending when the schedule is full. Those payments are still due when the grass slows down. Another major mistake is not knowing the company’s actual monthly overhead.

What off-season services have worked, and what has not?

Leaf cleanups, shrub trimming, mulch, pine straw, and smaller property cleanups fit well because they use equipment and skills we already have. What usually does not work is chasing heavily discounted one-time jobs or adding services outside the company’s normal scope simply to stay busy. Revenue is not useful if the job is not profitable.

Roughly what percentage of annual revenue comes from your slowest month versus your peak month?

We are still a relatively young company, so I am continuing to build reliable year-over-year data. Based on our experience so far, I would estimate that our slowest month produces roughly 25% to 35% of what we generate during a peak month.

                                                                           Back to All Experts

Shane Fellers

Lawn care Professional/ Owner

Green Earth Lawn and snow LLC, Detroit, MI

What do you do when the lawn care season wraps up — any off-season gigs that have worked well for you?

During the off-season, I do maintenance on my equipment. It goes down when night temps are around 65 degrees consistently. It germinates fast and creates a lush green lawn quickly. But what it does is protect the grass that is there now from the frost. On the first warm day of spring, the rye will die off, and you still have your lawn that you worked all summer long to get healthy.

It will need to be mowed at least 2 times a month, keeping our customers on their current schedule. Once the rye grass dies off, I recommend seeding again with the type of grass they currently have. This promotes a healthy lawn, keeping weeds away and filling in any areas that might need it.

I also explain to my customers that they should have their lawns mowed even during the winter months when the grass is dormant. The reason is that grass is like our hair: You cut off the dead ends, and it promotes growth. Providing them with a healthy lawn in the spring. I tell them not to cancel service during this time or put it on pause because they will lose their lawn.

Benefits: They have a healthy lawn year-round. If they live in an HOA community, they keep the HOA off their backs, saving on nasty letters, stress dealing with them, and possible fines.

I also let them know that if they seed or fertilize, they just pay for the seed or fertilizer and I put it down at no cost for labor while I am there mowing. It doesn’t take but a few extra minutes. Why I don’t charge labor is because without a healthy lawn I don’t have a customer, so with a few extra minutes of my time I have grass growing through all seasons.

And the customers love it. I give them the logical information and the least expensive way to do it. Customer service is the key, not just doing a good job mowing.

What off-season services have actually worked for you, and what didn’t?

Going into the winter months I also suggest trimming bushes, re-mulching, and general cleanup. Leaf removal is a big one around here also. With the trees shedding their leaves, gutter cleaning is definitely needed especially in the spring before grass starts growing again.

Many of my customers need clean-up now but I am asking them to wait until it gets a little colder and the grass part of the business slows down a little, giving us time to keep our schedule on mowing and take the time to add cleanups later without jeopardizing our current mowing schedule.

This year most of my customers understand that it is less expensive to follow this simple maintenance program.

Make Seasonal Income Work for You

Whether you're in Florida mowing nearly year-round or in North Dakota packing up for a 5-month winter, the math is the same: The money you make between spring and fall has to cover 12 months of bills.

The pros who make that work aren't necessarily the ones earning the most per hour — they're the ones who budget like their income is seasonal, because it is. Whether that means building a cash reserve, picking up a certification, or adding one or two off-season services from the list above, a little planning now pays off when the mowers go quiet.

Explore More Ways to Grow With LawnStarter and ProBase

Through the LawnStarter app, local customers can schedule your crew for lawn mowing, plus 30 additional outdoor services, including tree trimming, leaf cleanups, and pest control.

It’s free to sign up to become a LawnStarter pro.
