If done right, it acts as free winter fertilizer for your lawn.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMulching leaves back into the turf is a great use of the leaves, benefits overall lawn health, and takes little extra effort,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/newsmediarelations.colostate.edu\/contacts\/allison-oconnor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alison O\u2019Connor<\/a>, Extension professor of horticulture at Colorado State University Extension in Fort Collins.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some other reasons to consider mulching your leaves:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Mulched leaf litter breaks down over winter and boosts soil moisture retention and root growth, according to research by <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umn.edu\/yard-and-garden-news\/fall-leaf-mulching-good-your-lawn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Minnesota Extension<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>    <li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.illinois.edu\/blogs\/know-how-know-more\/2025-10-27-dont-bag-your-fall-leaves-use-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Illinois Extension<\/a> estimates that 2 inches of mulched leaves adds roughly 3.44 pounds of nitrogen, 0.46 pounds of phosphorus, and 1.49 pounds of potassium per acre, which is enough to meaningfully cut back on annual fertilizer needs.<\/li>    <li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canr.msu.edu\/uploads\/files\/Mulch_fallen_leavesRS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan State<\/a> found that mulching leaves into the lawn over a 3-year period reduced weed populations, like dandelions and crabgrass, nearly 100%,\u201d O\u2019Connor says. By filling in gaps in the lawn and blocking light to weed seeds, a mulched layer suppresses weeds before they can germinate.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here\u2019s how it works:<\/strong> \u201cIn the fall, remove the bag from the mower, and simply chop the leaves into smaller pieces and leave them on the lawn,\u201d O\u2019Connor says. \u201cIf you have a lot of trees, you may need to mulch the leaves on a regular basis &#8211; perhaps up to a couple of times a week.\u201d<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that mulching works only if the pieces are small enough to filter down between grass blades. \u201cAs long as you can see grass through the leaf litter, you won&#8217;t cause damage to the lawn,\u201d O\u2019Connor says. Bagging is also a good choice if your HOA has rules about visible leaf litter on the lawn.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s when to bag leaves:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Thick leaf piles:<\/strong> Grass should still be visible under the leaves. Otherwise, the leaves will smother the grass.&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><strong>Matted, wet leaves<\/strong>: Wet leaves clog up your lawn mower and can suffocate the grass.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><strong>Yard with more mature trees. <\/strong>Lots of large trees drop big piles of leaves. If leaves cover more than 20% of your lawn, you should mulch or bag them.
