Think about how your rain garden can smoothly integrate into your current landscape and how it\u2019ll affect future projects.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Follow these six steps to establish a rain garden in your landscape:<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-1-select-a-location\">1. Select a Location<\/h3>    <p>The ideal spot to build a rain garden is close enough to your house, where it can capture water running off the roof but not risk damaging your foundation due to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sAxEGpYlDUA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hydrostatic pressure<\/a>. Gross suggests choosing a spot at least 10 feet from any foundations to prevent saturated soil from threatening the structure.<\/p>    <p>You can also choose a spot farther afield and direct downspouts toward the garden. The ideal places to put rain gardens are in low-lying or naturally occurring depressions where rainwater flows. Here\u2019s what you need and what to avoid when picking the perfect spot for your rain garden.<\/p>    <h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-what-to-look-for-\"><strong>What to look for:<\/strong><\/h4>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Distance<\/strong>: A minimum of 10 feet from foundations and 50 feet from septic systems.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Utilities:<\/strong> Call 811. They\u2019ll mark where underground utilities are for free.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Drainage<\/strong>: Good drainage is critical. Perform a simple percolation or <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/EltyMWOMcU4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">infiltration test<\/a> to determine if the type of soil you have is suitable for a rain garden.&nbsp;Sandy soils are best, while clay soils don\u2019t drain well.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Sun: <\/strong>Pick a spot with at least partial, and preferably full, sun.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Size: <\/strong>Consider the size of the roof or other impervious surfaces that drain to the downspout and the distance between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/gutters\/where-should-you-direct-water-from-your-gutters\/\">downspout<\/a> and the rain garden. <br><br>A rain garden&#8217;s longest length should be perpendicular to the land&#8217;s slope and curved. Divide the rain garden area by the width, which will give you the length.<br><br><strong>Example<\/strong>: A 180 square feet rain garden that is 10 feet wide equals 18 feet long.<br><br>The garden size is up to you, but the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.wi.gov\/topic\/stormwater\/documents\/1009RainGarden.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">estimates<\/a> that a typical residential rain garden runs 100-300 square feet. Your local Extension office can provide guidance based on your location.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Depth<\/strong>: A typical rain garden ranges from four to eight inches deep.&nbsp;Greater than eight inches deep, and the water may take too long to drain or is a tripping hazard when dry. Less than four inches deep, the garden will need to cover a large area to endure heavy rain.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-what-to-avoid-\"><strong>What to avoid:<\/strong><\/h4>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Pooling<\/strong>: If an area turns into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/pennsylvania\/harrisburg-pa\/backyard-water-features-you-need-to-add\/#:~:text=your%C2%A0Harrisburg%20home.-,Ponds,-A%20pond%20is\">pond<\/a> every time it rains and drains slowly, there are better spots than this one. Poor drainage will be a problem. Think about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/tips-for-leveling-a-lawn\/\">leveling your yard<\/a> or making that area a koi pond.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Trees:<\/strong> Roots from nearby trees can make digging harder, and damage to the roots could kill the tree.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Overflow<\/strong>: If your garden catches overflow from the neighbor\u2019s yard, it may drain less quickly.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Pro Tip<\/strong>: Rain gardens will not work when the seasonal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/faqs\/how-can-i-find-depth-water-table-specific-location\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high water table<\/a> is less than 24 inches below the soil surface because it will prevent absorption.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-2-prepare-the-site\">2. Here\u2019s how to prepare your site and get started filtering the rain on your property.<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Outline<\/strong> your rain garden area with rope, landscaping flags, or a marking spray paint. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/berm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">berm<\/a> around the perimeter creates walls that will hold the water when it rains.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Remove<\/strong> all of the grass. Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/ways-remove-lawn-grass\/\">options<\/a> include cutting the sod to plant elsewhere or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/sheet-mulching-lasagna-garden\/#:~:text=What%20does%20sheet,the%20soil%E2%80%99s%20condition.\">killing the grass<\/a> before you start to make digging easier. Avoid chemical herbicides as this will possibly damage your new plants.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Dig<\/strong> out the area until the center is the lowest point and the sides form a gentle slope toward the middle.<br> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Remove soil until the bottom portion is 12 inches deep, and make it level.<br><\/li>    <li>Use the extra dirt to build up the berm on the downhill side. A perforated pipe is laid on the rock, and the trench is backfilled with dirt or stones.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Create a swale:<\/strong> Swales are familiar sights along highways. They are drainage ditches or sloped and marshy portions of the land. Adding inexpensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/cost\/pea-gravel-price\/\">pea gravel<\/a> will improve your swale.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Dig a dry creek bed:<\/strong> An arroyo, or <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/eVlUubTL3WM\">dry creek bed<\/a>, is a shallow trench filled with stone, like river rock.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-4-pick-the-right-plants\">4.
