These materials work by <strong>feeding soil microbes<\/strong> and <strong>supporting long-term soil fertility<\/strong>, rather than delivering the fast-food equivalent of nutrients.&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>For every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsuagcenter.com\/articles\/page1756236547274#:~:text=A%201%25%20increase%20in%20soil,to%20increased%20runoff%20and%20erosion.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1% increase in soil organic matter<\/a>, a single acre of soil can hold up to <strong>20,000 additional gallons of water, according to LSU AgCenter.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Agricultural research found that organic land management yielded a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0180442#:~:text=Overall%2C%20we%20found%20that%20organic,protease%20activities%20than%20conventional%20systems.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">32-84% increase<\/a> in <strong>beneficial microbial biomass<\/strong> compared to conventional synthetic systems.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/difference-between-organic-synthetic-fertilizer\/\">Synthetic fertilizers<\/a> are typically a fast-acting blend of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/fertilizer-numbers-what-they-mean\/\">20-10-10 fertilizer<\/a> contains 20% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 10% potassium.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While synthetic fertilizers offer an immediate, vibrant green-up for your grass, heavy reliance on synthetics can kill off beneficial microbes, leaving your soil quality worse off.<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>A 2024 study found that <strong>long-term use<\/strong> of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11356719\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decreased average soil pH<\/a> by <strong>15.27%<\/strong>. While this is convenient for homeowners, it <strong>indiscriminately adds chemicals<\/strong> across the entire lawn, whether weeds are present or not.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/iwla.org\/nitrate-watch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nitrates<\/a> are a common concern for groundwater contamination. They are naturally occurring compounds, composed of both nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrate pollution can be caused by the misuse of synthetic fertilizer, but can also be due to animal manure, landfills, and sewage or discharge from septic systems.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pesticides<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPesticide\u201d is an umbrella term encompassing substances like <strong>herbicides<\/strong> (targeting weeds), <strong>insecticides<\/strong> (insects), <strong>fungicides<\/strong> (fungal diseases), and <strong>rodenticides<\/strong> (rodents).<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/pest-control\/what-is-organic-pest-control\/\">Organic pest control<\/a> relies on a wide range of solutions depending on the pest problem. Some common options include neem oil, spinosad, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/diatomaceous-earth-pest-control\/\">diatomaceous earth<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/beneficial-nematodes\/\">beneficial nematodes<\/a>, sulfur, <em>Bacillus thuringiensis<\/em> (Bt), milky spore, exclusion, and habitat manipulation.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/managesafe\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201dLeast-toxic\u201d pesticides<\/a> are derived from plants or natural minerals (like essential oils) and have low (but not 0) health hazards for humans and the environment.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/natural-weed-killers-a-guide-to-organic-herbicides\/\">Organic herbicides<\/a> are commonly made with ingredients like herbicidal soaps, acetic acid, citric acid, d-limonene, essential oils, chelated iron, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/corn-gluten-meal-natural-weed-and-feed\/\">corn gluten meal<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Keep in mind:<\/strong> There are numerous organic pesticides (including herbicides) that can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xerces.org\/publications\/fact-sheets\/common-organic-allowed-pesticides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">toxic to bees<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/integrated-pest-management-lawn\/\">Integrated Pest Management<\/a> (IPM) follows a structure led by <strong>lawn health and prevention<\/strong>. The goal is to make the lawn inhospitable to weeds and pests through <strong>proper mowing, watering, and soil fertility<\/strong> \u2014 with chemicals only being used as a last resort.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Synthetic pesticides \u2014 like glyphosate, carbaryl, and chlorothalonil \u2014 are designed to kill either weeds, insects, fungus, or rodents, but their effects rarely stop at the target.\u00a0<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Broad-spectrum pesticides<\/strong> will harm beneficial insects, pollinators, and destroy soil microbes.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Systemic pesticides<\/strong>, like imidacloprid, get absorbed by every part of the plant \u2014 including pollen and nectar \u2014 which will harm pollinators. Imidacloprid can be <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2023\/11\/states-step-in-to-restrict-bee-toxic-pesticides-california-the-latest-in-absence-of-epa-action\/#:~:text=Dr.%20Goulson%2C%20author,is%20quite%20concerning.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7,000X more toxic than DDT<\/a> for honeybees.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>2,4-D<\/strong>, one of the most commonly used lawn herbicides, was one of 2 herbicides used as a component of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ingredients-used-pesticide-products\/24-d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agent Orange<\/a>. The other herbicide, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/tapwater\/contaminant.php?contamcode=2111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2,4,5-T<\/a>, was banned in 1985, but trace amounts have still been detected in a few water utilities in the U.S. as of 2023.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Elements Impacting Your Lawn<\/h3>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/organic-mulch-vs-inorganic-mulch\/\">Inorganic mulch<\/a> made from rubber, plastic, and film can impact the soil microbiome. Even \u201corganic mulch\u201d can be contaminated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/sierra\/mulch-dirtier-you-think\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microplastics<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/10715938_Impact_of_chromated_copper_arsenate_CCA_in_wood_mulch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heavy metals<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Chemical de-icers and road salt (sodium chloride) from the winter season can <a href=\"https:\/\/homegarden.cahnr.uconn.edu\/2025\/11\/23\/road_salt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">degrade the soil structure<\/a>, leaching <a href=\"https:\/\/plant-pest-advisory.rutgers.edu\/impact-of-road-salt-on-adjacent-vegetation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heavy metals<\/a>, and potentially causing a physiological drought for your plants, even when the soil is wet. They can also impact water quality.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-prevent-neighbors-dog-pooping-in-yard\/\">Pet waste<\/a> might seem like just any other neighborhood squabble, but it can make a cumulative environmental impact. D.C. residents are about <strong>4X more interested<\/strong> in this topic than <strong>Arizona<\/strong> residents, who demonstrate the <strong>lowest interest in organic lawn care<\/strong>, followed by <strong>Florida<\/strong>, <strong>Louisiana<\/strong>, and <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Folks in <strong>New York<\/strong>, <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>, and <strong>Illinois<\/strong> have the <strong>most concern for their pets<\/strong> when it comes to lawn management, with the highest volume of searches for \u201cpet safe lawn care\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/fertilizer-bad-for-dogs\/\">dog friendly lawn fertilizer<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenresearch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2026 National Gardening Report<\/a>, there was a <strong>35% increase<\/strong> in spending for <strong>insect control<\/strong>. You also need some patience and perhaps lower expectations.<\/p> <p><strong>How long does the transition period from conventional to organic lawn care typically take, and what should homeowners expect during that window?<\/strong><\/p> <p>It depends on two things: The condition of the lawn at the time of transition and the client\u2019s willingness to allow a \u201chybrid\u201d program with sparing use of chemicals during this time.<\/p> <p>If it\u2019s a lawn in good shape to begin with, then the transition can be quite immediate. If it\u2019s a lawn in poor shape and the client does not have the willingness to use synthetic chemicals during the transition, then it can take 2 to 4 years to transition the lawn to a state that is useful and aesthetically pleasing.<\/p> <p><strong>How does the long-term cost of organic lawn care compare to conventional programs once the soil ecosystem is established?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Once the lawn is in good condition, then the cost of the pre-emergence treatment (if needed) with corn gluten meal is still significantly higher compared to a synthetic weed and feed (approximately 5X more expensive). If there is not a continuing need for pre-emergence, then a different organic fertilizer may be used, but it will still cost around twice as much.<\/p> <p>Postemergence with chelated iron (3 applications per year to treat perennials for a season) is about 20X the cost per unit area, but this cost can be significantly reduced either if the lawn is weed-free because the turf is in good condition, or if the product can be spot-sprayed rather than blanket-applied.<\/p> <p><strong>There&#8217;s a perception that organic means &#8220;no chemicals.&#8221; What&#8217;s the reality of what organic certification does and doesn&#8217;t guarantee?<\/strong><\/p> <p>This depends on the laws in your area to an extent. Mowing is an injury; grass survives, but does not like it. Doing it wrong makes it weaker and more susceptible to problems. Occasionally, I even see them deal with the excess leaf production by lowering the mower deck to scalp the lawn \u2014 usually in May \u2014 right in time for crabgrass to start to germinate.<\/li> <\/ol> <ol start=\"3\"> <li>They want a green lawn, but wait until the grass has turned brown due to dry weather and then flood it so that it must produce new leaf tissue rather than rehydrate the existing leaves.
