And that waste adds up to 22% of the rubbish that ends up in municipal landfills. If you\u2019re looking for a more sustainable lifestyle, learning how to compost at home is a good step in that direction.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-what-is-composting\">What Is Composting?<\/h2>    <p>Basically, organic composting is a natural process in which a pile of yard waste and kitchen scraps decomposes into organic matter. Mix the right ingredients in the right proportions, and bacteria, fungi, and earthworms will produce a material praised as \u201cblack gold.\u201d This is added to soil to improve its structure, fertility, and water-holding capacity.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-how-does-composting-happen\">How Does Composting Happen?<\/h2>    <p>The composting process requires five components:<\/p>    <ol class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Carbon (C)<\/li>    <li>Nitrogen (N)<\/li>    <li>Moisture<\/li>    <li>Oxygen (O2)<\/li>    <li>Microorganisms<\/li> <\/ol>    <p>In the presence of moisture and oxygen, <a href=\"http:\/\/compost.css.cornell.edu\/microorg.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microorganisms<\/a> such as bacteria, fungi, bugs, and worms work in three stages to break down the biodegradable materials into humus.<\/p>    <p>Experts say the composting process can take anywhere from a few months to three years, though a <a href=\"https:\/\/hortnews.extension.iastate.edu\/faq\/how-long-does-it-take-compost-pile-break-down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">well-managed compost pile<\/a> could be ready in two to four months.&nbsp; You can take many steps to move things along and get your lawn and garden in shape more quickly.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-the-3-stages-of-composting\">The 3 Stages of Composting<\/h2>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-stage-1-initial-organic-decomposition\">Stage 1: Initial Organic Decomposition<\/h3>    <p>In the first stage, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.owp.csus.edu\/glossary\/mesophilic-bacteria.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mesophilic organisms<\/a> (which live in moderate temperatures from 68 degrees to 113 degrees Fahrenheit) begin to break materials into smaller pieces. This stage takes a couple of days and begins to increase the pile\u2019s internal temperature.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-stage-2-complex-organics-break-down\">Stage 2: Complex Organics Break Down<\/h3>    <p>When the temperature becomes too warm for mesophiles, the second stage starts, and <a href=\"https:\/\/serc.carleton.edu\/microbelife\/extreme\/extremeheat\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thermophilic microorganisms<\/a> (which thrive from 113 degrees to 252 degrees Fahrenheit) take over.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>These higher temperatures let thermophiles efficiently break down proteins, fats, and complex carbohydrates into finer particles. Stage two can span days or months, depending on the conditions within the compost pile.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-stage-3-breakdown-\">Stage 3: Breakdown&nbsp;<\/h3>    <p>As thermophilic microorganisms use up the materials, the pile\u2019s temperature starts to drop, allowing the mesophiles to retake control of the process. Typical brown items are wood-based or fibrous: dry leaves, branches, stems, sawdust, tree bark, shredded newspaper, corn stalks, wood ash, and pine needles.<\/li>    <li><strong>Green materials<\/strong> <strong>are nitrogen-based <\/strong>waste materials. They provide amino acids and proteins needed for the bacteria and fungi to do their job. Food scraps, coffee grounds, green leaves, and grass clippings are excellent nitrogen-rich green materials.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong> A simple rule of thumb is to make sure the compost pile is approximately 2\/3 \u201cbrown\u201d materials and 1\/3 \u201cgreen\u201d materials.<\/p>    <p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Manure is not recommended for home composting piles.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-different-ways-to-compost\">Different Ways to Compost<\/h2>    <p>There are many ways to set up a composting spot in your backyard (or kitchen). The main difference is where and how you pile the materials. Home composting methods offer flexibility and vary in cost and difficulty.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Here are five composting systems to consider:<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"9-outdoor-composting-methods\">Outdoor Composting Methods<\/h3>    <ol class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Piling<\/strong>: You literally heap the materials into a pile and turn them periodically to aerate. You can put it in the sun or shade, but sunshine will quicken the process.<\/li>    <li><strong>Composting bins<\/strong>: Composting bins can be open or enclosed. This can be a DIY building project or can be purchased.&nbsp; <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><em>Open bins<\/em><\/strong> are partial structures that allow ventilation and aeration. One side is easily accessible so you can add materials and turn the pile.&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><strong><em>Enclosed bins<\/em><\/strong> use a lid to enclose the material completely, eliminating both the sight and smell of a compost pile.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li>    <li><strong>Tumblers<\/strong>: If making a batch of backyard compost is your dream, this is the easiest way to get started. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/reviews\/best-compost-bins\/\">Compost tumblers<\/a> are a unique, efficient type of enclosed compost bin. Cylindrical in nature, a tumbler has hand-held insets or a handle that allows it to be \u201cturned\u201d or tumbled easily.&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><strong>Bokashi composting<\/strong>: Bokashi composting starts indoors but ends up outside in the soil for the last phase of decomposition, so we\u2019ll consider it an outdoor method. Bokashi is more a method of fermentation than composting.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ol>    <p><strong>Here\u2019s how Bokashi works:<\/strong> Kitchen scraps are mixed with an inoculated bran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/reviews\/best-compost-bins\/#:~:text=4.%20SCD%20Probiotics%20All%20Seasons%20Indoor%20Composter%20with%20Bokashi\">in a bucket<\/a> to start the fermentation. Then, the fermented mixture is placed in the ground for a few weeks to finish the process.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Bokashi differs from other composting methods because you can compost things like meat scraps and dairy products. Environmentalists love that it\u2019s easy to reduce food waste and repurpose it in their gardens.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"10-indoor-composting-methods\">Indoor Composting Methods<\/h3>    <p><strong>Vermicomposting<\/strong>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/earthworms-help-lawn-grass-soil\/#:~:text=for%20plant%20uptake.-,Vermicomposting,-Earthworms%20are%20a\">worm composting<\/a>, is a method of composting that relies heavily on a type of worm known as a red wiggler to break down the materials. It is often done in a specialized worm bin and focuses mainly on compostable kitchen waste.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>If you live in an apartment, backyard composting isn\u2019t an option, but that\u2019s where worm composting comes in. Vermicomposting is a popular method of <em>indoor composting<\/em>, and the finished product can be used to give a boost of nutrients to your houseplants or outdoor potted plants.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"11-how-to-start-a-compost-pile\">How to Start a Compost Pile<\/h2>    <figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <iframe title=\"Beginner&#039;s Guide to Composting\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/egyNJ7xPyoQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> <\/div><\/figure>    <p>The simplest way to compost is to create a pile or heap in an outdoor space, tending to it as necessary. If possible, situate it in a dry spot fairly close to a water source.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Check out the process:&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Clear<\/strong> <strong>a space<\/strong> in your yard or garden, exposing bare soil.<\/li>    <li><strong>Build<\/strong> <strong>a base layer of straw or twigs<\/strong>. A few inches will help provide good drainage.<\/li>    <li><strong>Add<\/strong> <strong>layers of materials<\/strong> to be composted one at a time, alternating between brown and green materials.<\/li>    <li><strong>Incorporate<\/strong> <strong>a nitrogen source<\/strong><em> <\/em>to start decomposition. Some gardeners add a handful of nitrogen fertilizer to jump-start the process.<\/li>    <li><strong>Keep the pile moist<\/strong>. It\u2019s recommended that the materials should feel like a damp sponge \u2014 wet enough that you can feel the water, but not so wet that you can squeeze water out.<\/li>    <li><strong>Turn<\/strong> <strong>the compost pile<\/strong> every couple of weeks to allow the center of the pile to \u201cheat up.\u201d A pitchfork works well for this. To speed up decomposition in your compost pile, keep in mind the following \u201cdo\u2019s\u201d and \u201cdon\u2019ts.\u201d<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"15-do\">DO<\/h3>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Chop<\/strong> all materials into smaller pieces.<\/li>    <li><strong>Cover<\/strong> the top of the pile if your area gets a lot of rain.<\/li>    <li><strong>Add nitrogen<\/strong> fertilizer if the ratio of brown materials is too high.<\/li>    <li><strong>Add pulverized eggshells<\/strong> to increase calcium in your finished compost.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"16-don%E2%80%99t\">DON\u2019T<\/h3>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Don\u2019t leave food waste<\/strong> at the top of the pile. It can attract rodents and other critters.<\/li>    <li><strong>Don\u2019t put plant roots<\/strong>, diseased plant tissue, or pesticide-infected plant matter in the pile.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"17-how-to-tell-when-your-compost-is-ready\">How to Tell When Your Compost is Ready<\/h2>    <p>When all of the waste has been broken down and the compost is ready to use, the temperature of the pile will drop dramatically. The finished product will look and feel like dark, rich soil with a deep, earthy smell. At that point, you\u2019ll be ready to apply this fresh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-apply-soil-amendments\/#7-how-to-apply-soil-amendments-to-the-lawn-\">soil amendment<\/a> to your yard or garden.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"18-faq\">FAQ<\/h2>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"19-why-does-my-compost-pile-smell-bad\">Why Does My Compost Pile Smell Bad?<\/h3>    <p>A well-maintained pile should have an earthy smell. <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.missouri.edu\/g6956#Diagnosing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bad smells<\/a> may mean the pile is too tight or too wet. Turn the pile to get more air circulation. If it\u2019s too wet, add new dry material.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"20-what-can-i-do-with-vegetable-scraps-if-i-don%E2%80%99t-have-a-compost-bin\">What Can I Do With Vegetable Scraps if I Don\u2019t Have a Compost Bin?<\/h3>    <p>Try <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/gardening\/soil-compost\/do-rot-thing-choosing-using-composting-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in-place composting<\/a>. Simply dig a 12-inch-deep hole in your garden, dump in the organic waste, and cover with dirt.
