Our food crops, such as tree fruits, pumpkins, and countless others, depend on wild bees and other pollinators. Wild bees, especially bumblebees, are essential to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/gund\/news\/secret-better-berries-wild-bees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blueberry pollination<\/a>. They release pollen from the flowers using the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumblebeeconservation.org\/bee-faqs\/buzz-pollination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">buzz pollination<\/a>\u201d technique.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The problem: <\/strong>Farmland development has become a problem for over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmers.gov\/blog\/value-birds-and-bees#:~:text=More%20than%204%2C000%20bee%20species%20buzz%20around%20the%20United%20States.%20Honey%20bees%20alone%20pollinate%2080%20percent%20of%20all%20flowering%20plants%2C%20including%20more%20than%20130%20types%20of%20fruits%20and%20vegetables.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4,000 known species<\/a> of bee pollinators in the United States. Bee habitats \u2014 grasslands, meadows, and woodlands \u2014 have been replaced with tilled farm furrows.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The solution: <\/strong>You! You can help restore habitats for these essential pollinators by planting a bee-friendly lawn.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-what-is-a-bee-lawn\">What is a Bee Lawn?<\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These untraditional lawns are not the manicured spreads of a single species of grass, with interlopers plucked out. Instead, they attract bees by giving them what they like. Although bees are attracted to a wide range of vegetation, only a few are suitable for lawns. The essential elements for a bee lawn are bee-friendly grass and low-growing, blooming plants that can survive foot traffic and add color to your lawn.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-turfgrasses\">Turfgrasses<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main grass types used on a bee lawn are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/cool-season-grass-growing-guide\/#2-kentucky-bluegrass\">cool-season<\/a> grasses, which do well if seeded in the fall.&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Fescues<\/strong>: Lawns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/overseed-fall-fescue\/\">overseeded<\/a> with these grasses are low-maintenance, and adding pollinator-friendly plants improves their tolerance to heavy foot traffic. Fine fescue is the best option but all the fescues are bee-lawn-friendly.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Kentucky bluegrass:<\/strong> Kentucky bluegrass is a good option because of its growth habit and compatibility with bee lawn flowers. However, it requires more fertilizer and water than fine fescue.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Other grasses:<\/strong> Other turf grasses aren\u2019t as well suited for a bee lawn, but you could always substitute that turf with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/native-grasses-are-they-right-for-your-lawn\/\">native grasses<\/a> for an even more eco-friendly lawn.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-plants\">Plants<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flowering plants are best if seeded into your lawn in the spring.<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Violets<\/strong> (<em>Viola sororia<\/em>): In addition to being beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canr.msu.edu\/news\/consider-a-flowering-bee-lawn-to-help-pollinators#:~:text=The%20best%20choice,or%20direct%20sunlight.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bee havens<\/a>, these early purple blossoms and wide leaves form a canopy that blocks rival plants from growing in your yard. Their broadleaf habit makes them excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/companion-plants-that-love-your-lawn-and-vice-versa\/#:~:text=them%20their%20lushness.-,Violets%20%E2%80%93,-Seeding%20violets%20with\">companion plants<\/a> in a traditional lawn because they help shade out weeds.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Dutch white clover <\/strong>(<em>Trifolium repens<\/em>): Before the 1950s, clover was common in the United States. Flowering plants such as the dandelion or clover are seen as a nuisance in such lawns. But flowers within a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2010-12-13\/polyculture-lawn-primer\/#:~:text=A%20polyculture%20lawn%2C%20which%20some%20call%20a%20clover%20lawn%2C%20provides%20ecological%20services%2C%20increases%20biodiversity%2C%20helps%20manage%20and%20conserve%20water%2C%20and%20stores%20carbon.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polyculture lawn<\/a>, like clover and bee lawns, have been shown to support at least 66 species, including 55 bee species on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/were-thinking-over-why-we-kill-clover\/\">Dutch white clover<\/a> alone.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bee lawns add diversity to the property\u2019s landscape, and as a result, they need less maintenance. Reducing the need for irrigation, fertilizer, and mowing can save homeowners and land managers money. Photo credit: Spivak Bee Lab and Watkins Turfgrass Science Lab, University of Minnesota.<\/figcaption><\/figure>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-how-to-build-a-bee-friendly-lawn\">How to Build a Bee-Friendly Lawn<\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The overall goal of a bee lawn: Instead of using one type of grass, use a seed mix with several different types of grass and low-growing perennials that bloom at other times of the year.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Native plants and more-diverse landscapes also contribute to a healthy bee population. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-aerate-overseed\/\">Aerate and overseed lawns<\/a> with bee-friendly fescues, clovers, creeping thyme, or self heal.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUse fine fescue (<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2019-05-bees-money-bee-lawn.html#:~:text=%22This%20grass%20has%20a%20thin%20leaf%20blade%20and%20a%20slow%20rate%20of%20growth%2C%22%20Wolfin%20said.%20%22The%20slow%20rate%20of%20growth%20is%20essential%20in%20making%20sure%20the%20grass%20blades%20do%20not%20create%20a%20canopy%20over%20the%20flowers.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Festuca brevipila<\/em><\/a>) grasses, which require less water, fertilizer, and mowing than conventional Kentucky bluegrass lawns,\u201d says James Wolfin, a graduate research assistant working on the University of Minnesota&#8217;s bee lawn project.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-location\">Location<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many wild bees nest in the ground and prefer undisturbed areas with loose, un-mulched soil.&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Low traffic areas<\/strong> around your home, like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/landscaping-ideas-small-side-yard\/\">side yard<\/a> or a portion of your lawn that doesn\u2019t have much foot traffic.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Hard-to-mow areas<\/strong>, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/grass-seed\/grow-grass-from-seed\/\">reseeded<\/a>, save your time and your back. This is ideal for embankments, sloping yards, or unused areas.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Along sidewalks<\/strong> and driveways to keep the spreading nature of your bee lawn from creeping over to the neighbors\u2019. Even spaces between patio or stepping stones look great when seeded with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/best-flowering-ground-cover-plants\/\">low-growing bloomers<\/a> such as lilyturf, clover, or sweet alyssum.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-soil\">Soil<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The versatility of bee lawns means there are many plants to choose from. Select from the many plants that will work in your soil so they\u2019ll grow well and make the bees happy. Testing your soil first will tell you what plants will thrive in your yard.<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Get a soil test<\/strong> to know what works in your soil and if amendments are needed. You can get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/ph-soil-test-lawn-grass\/\">soil test<\/a> from your local Extension office.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Native plants<\/strong> and more diverse landscapes can also contribute to a healthy bee population. Plus, native grasses are adapted to your current soil conditions.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Compacted areas<\/strong> restrict growth and need aerating before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-overseed-lawn\/\">overseeding<\/a> to loosen the soil. If turfgrass won\u2019t grow there, neither will the rest of your bee lawn.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"9-sunlight\">Sunlight<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bee lawns, like most plants, need the sun to grow. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/landscaping-for-shade\/#:~:text=Assessing%20the%20Amount%20of%20Shade%20and%20Light\">How much sun<\/a> you need is determined by what you decide to grow.<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Sunny areas<\/strong>: Kentucky bluegrass and violets will bring color to your yard.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Shaded areas<\/strong>: Fine fescue and self-heal will thrive in hard-to-grow spaces.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Partial-shade<\/strong>: Tall fescue and white clover can span the gap.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"10-maintenance\">Maintenance<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bee-friendly lawns don&#8217;t require any more maintenance than regular lawns, and they may require less, depending on how often you mow. The program began in 2019 and is ongoing as of this writing.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"12-the-importance-of-wild-native-bees\">The Importance of Wild, Native Bees<\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wild bees are different from the cultivated colonies of honeybees, a non-native type of bee kept in beehives and tended by beekeepers as commercial pollinators.
