The norm is within 24 hours, but how long it can wait depends on the season and where you live.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carter, who installs sod in the Northeast, uses this guideline:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Summer:<\/strong> Install it right away, and don\u2019t let it sit overnight.<\/li>    <li><strong>Spring and fall:<\/strong> Install it as soon as possible, by the next morning at the latest.<\/li>    <li><strong>Winter:<\/strong> It can usually wait a day or so, depending on how cool it is.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the \u201csummer time, timing is everything for a successful installation,\u201d he says.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oklahoma State University Extension recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.okstate.edu\/fact-sheets\/how-storage-time-and-harvest-season-impact-the-success-of-planting-bermudagrass-and-zoysiagrass-sod\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">storing pallets in shade<\/a> and <strong>lightly moistening<\/strong> the outer surfaces to limit drying. The key is not to soak pallets in hot weather, Carter says. If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/ways-remove-lawn-grass\/\">remove existing grass<\/a>, avoid herbicides like glyphosate, whose residue can linger in the soil for up to 4 months and harm new sod.<\/p><\/li>    <li><p _hash=\"fllMzi\"><strong>Till the soil:<\/strong> Break up the soil and alleviate soil compaction by <a href=\"https:\/\/hgic.clemson.edu\/factsheet\/lawn-establishment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tilling the soil<\/a> to a depth of 4 to 6 inches so roots can reach deep. <em>Mark sprinkler heads and buried lines first to avoid damaging them.<\/em><\/p><\/li>    <li><p _hash=\"3hValr\"><strong>Amend the soil:<\/strong> If the soil test results recommend it, adjust the soil pH by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/why-how-to-lime-lawn\/\">adding lime<\/a> or acidifying products. Carter says the right amount depends on how deep the water soaks into the soil, not how many minutes it runs. To check, pull up a corner of the sod and make sure the water has reached a few inches into the soil below, he says.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Laying sod on a slope:<\/strong> Run strips across the hill, not up and down it, since downhill seams become water channels in the first rain.
